Senior citizen programs see changes

By Vicki L. George
The Bandera Prophet

The Alamo Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc., through its Senior Assistance Program, offers many resources to our senior citizens in Bandera County.
While these programs will remain, Alamo RC&D has implemented several changes in some of the programs to begin this month and next. These changes were announced at their June Health Event.
The Senior Mini-Food Pantry remains unchanged. It will continue to take place every month on the second and fourth Fridays, from noon to 3 p.m. They continue to work with the Hill Country Daily Bread to provide grocery items to those in need, who are at least 55 years old. Applicants can bring two bags and fill them at no cost at each visit.
Although the annual June fan drive is over, those in need of a fan may still contact Alamo RC&D and they will get a fan.
One major change is the elimination of the bi-monthly Health Event. That is now replaced by a monthly Senior Social that includes a meal, which is free to seniors, followed by fun and games with prizes. The next Senior Social is Friday, July 19, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The theme is a celebration of Independence Day. They will honor July birthdays and anniversaries. But there will be no guest speakers. It is a time for seniors to get together and socialize, to get to know each other and enjoy the camaraderie. Because the meal is provided, an RSVP is required.
There will now be guest speakers at the monthly Lunch & Learn, with presentations on senior service resources. The lunch is a pot-luck meal, which is free to participants. Since seating is limited for this event, an RSVP is required. The next Lunch & Learn will be Wednesday, July 31 and the speaker will be Alma Aguirre of Alamo RC&D. Her presentation will be on “Beware of Senior Fraud.” It will run from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
The Fun-n-Fitness exercise class will continue to meet every Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to noon. It is free and uses low impact exercises, both sitting and standing. Free medical screenings are provided by Aida Minnick, our Methodist Health Ministries Wesley Nurse.
The newest program begins in August, the free Sassy Granny Arts and Crafts Class for seniors. It will be held on Wednesdays. All supplies will be provided. Sign up for this class now so that Alamo RC&D can bring enough materials for everyone.
All the programs and events will take place at Faith Tabernacle, located at 7789 FM 1283. The monthly Senior Social will be in the Fellowship Hall and the rest of the programs will be in the Pantry Barn.
Alamo RC&D programs and events are free and open to the public. They have served Bexar and surrounding counties, including Bandera County, since 1993.
Alamo RC&D is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. They are in need of donations, which are tax deductible, and volunteers. To learn more or to RSVP or to donate, call 210-548-9248 or go online at www.alamorcd.org or email [email protected]. Find current information on their Facebook page or Twitter.
