Two women, who preferred their names not be released, relax in the river at Bandera City Park on Saturday, Aug. 24, despite the warning signs. They said they were concerned about bacteria in the water, and were keeping their eyes, ears, noses and mouths out of the water.

Water warning signs posted at Bandera City Park

The Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District has placed warning signs along the river bank in Bandera City Park. The water could be a petri dish of bacteria due to low to no water flow and increasingly warm temperatures.
BCRAGD issued a warning statement Aug 15 that swimming in the area waters may be hazardous.
"BCRAGD strongly advises, at this time, to avoid recreational contact, including swimming, in the Medina and Sabinal Rivers and their tributaries," the warning stated.
In addition to potentially harmful organisms that thrive in the warm, still water, blooming algae - including toxic blue green algae, flourish in these conditions. Though no serious health issues have been reported in Bandera County, reports of dogs dying after exposure to blue green algae in neighboring counties have been made.
