Bulldogs show improvement in final scrimmage

Bandera's Bulldogs made a short road trip to Fort Sam Houston last Friday to take on the Cole Cougars in their last scrimmage before the season opener this Friday against S.A. Memorial.
After the first scrimmage against Devine, varsity head coach Joel Fontenot-Amadee told the team that they would see major improvement from the first to the second scrimmage and the live half against Cole would prove him right.
The first "half" was played in the usual 10 down format, 10 downs on offense and then that team swaps over to defense. Both sides looked fair in the “half," but it was evident they were ready for the "live" half that is played under game conditions.
Bandera took the "live" win, 8-6, on the strength of two short Blase Salazar field goals and a safety, scored on a defensive stop on a rush, in the Cole endzone.
Bandera could have possibly kicked a third field goal, but the Bulldog coaching staff wanted to give the offense some red zone downs. Cole kept Bandera out of the end zone and the ball went to Cole on a turnover.
Cole scored soon after on an 85 yard rush for their only points in the live half.
"We ran the ball and executed up front much better this week and we are going to see improvement as the season goes on. We took care of the ball offensively and defensively, we had some key stops in the live half."
"We are fired up to open at home in front of a big crowd and get after it,"Amadee said.
Looking forward to Friday's opening game, Bandera owes Memorial a little payback for last year's loss in San Antonio. Bandera had two rushing touchdowns called back, due to holding calls, in the 21-6 loss to the Minutemen.
Don't forget, opening night is also 'Lil Bulldog Night.
Bulldog summer football campers will lead the team out onto the field before the game.
Bulldog Stadium's gates will open at 6 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
