Bulldog cross-county splits up to compete
By Chris Darus
The Bandera Prophet
Due to the Fredericksburg Inv. and the TAMU- Corpus Christi Islander Splash cross-country meets being separated by just three days, Bandera's coaches decided to split the teams up with the JV going to Fredericksburg and the varsity heading to the larger meet in Corpus Christi.
The meet in Fredericksburg was a scorcher, with high temps and humidity, and a few competitors were tended to by EMS personel and transported to a local hospital. In fact, later races were cancelled because of the extreme conditions and lack of EMS on site.
The host Lady Billies had five runners in the top ten to take first place with 24 points followed by Kerrville, Harper, Medina and Bandera.
Ashley Grodman and Mia Ramirez were the top finishers for Bandera with Emily Garcia, Anna Guajardo and Noellia Guevarra also scoring points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Tanna Flewellen and Courtney Dowda also ran.
The Bandera boys did well, finishing on the podium in third place just behind Kerrville and Fredericksburg.
Bailey Cox, Juan Reyna and Braden Cox finished in the top ten with Cody Jureczki and Reese Mazurek also scoring points for their 14th and 22nd place
performances. Donovan Brown and Sage Wiltse also ran for Bandera.
At the Islander meet, one of the largest in the state, Bandera finished second in the Medium/Small school division, just five points behind Yoakum and nine points ahead of perennial Region III standout, Huffman Hargrave.
"For a third of our younger girls, this was their first really big meet to compete in," coach Brooke Ashcraft said.
It was a big meet, with 345 runners representing 65 schools in the Medium/Small school division alone.
Suprisingly, only Bandera and Huffman Hargrave had two runners in the top ten, Yoakum took the win with just a single runner in the first 10 spots, but their number five runner was in 31st.
Bandera's Morgan Cole was back in form to finish third and Raelynn Butler finished in ninth for team scoring. Elexis Pearson, Corrine McMullen and Kaitlyn Doebbler were the other points scorers for Bandera.
"I also want to commend Hannah Edwards, Jordan Edwards, Mallorie Powell, Bietzel Gonzales, Madison Gillapsie, Caitlin Watson, and Ofelia Macias on a job well done. I appreciated all of their efforts and hard work, " said Ashcraft.
The varsity Bulldogs were lead by Ethan Brown with a 36th place finish in the field of 358 runners. Overall, Bandera ended up in 16th place and six of the teams seven runners managed a top 50 percent finish.
Bandera's next meet will be a preview of the course the state meet will be run on at the McNeil Invitational in Round Rock at Old Settlers Park.
