Book some time at the Bandera Library

By Michael Garr, Library Director
Special to the Prophet

Bandera Public Library will host the second meeting of Pathways Youth and Family Services for Foster Parents, Adoptive Parents and Caregivers on Friday, Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the lower level conference room. You may call them at 210-733-7117 to confirm your attendance. The Library will observe Veteran’s Day with a closure on the holiday weekend including Saturday, Nov. 9 and Monday, Nov. 11. Stop by and see the collection of books commemorating the Battle of Midway and the release of the new movie that weekend called, “Midway.” Support your veterans.
November is an exciting time as authors want their books circulating for those holiday sales. Two blockbuster popular authors publish their new books about a week apart each October.  Lee Child’s 24th book in the Jack Reacher series is “Blue Moon." You’ll love this description from the book jacket. "This is a random universe," Reacher says. "Once in a blue moon things turn out just right." This isn't one of those times. Reacher is on a Greyhound bus, minding his own business, with no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there. Then he steps off the bus to help an old man who is obviously just a victim waiting to happen. But you know what they say about good deeds. Now Reacher wants to make it right.
An elderly couple have made a few well-meaning mistakes, and now they owe big money to some very bad people. One brazen move leads to another, and suddenly Reacher finds himself a wanted man in the middle of a brutal turf war between rival Ukrainian and Albanian gangs."
The second must read book is by bestselling author Michael Connelly. His 22nd Harry Bosch book also featuring relatively new character Renee Ballard, is called “The Night Fire." Harry Bosch and LAPD Detective Renee Ballard come together again on the murder case that obsessed Bosch's mentor, the man who trained him. As with their previous collaboration, there are several cases happening simultaneously. It’s a great read. Both the Connelly and Child books are available at the Library in hardcover, large print and audio. Stop by or call 830-796-4213 to get on the waitlist.
Jane Cockram makes a thrilling debut with a psychological suspense book called, “The House of Brides." Here is a description of the book by author Ellen LaCorte. “This is a twisty, turny ride through the English countryside. Set in a spooky manor home on a rocky coast, this is the story of multiple generations of powerful women whose actions lead to a mystery that winds through the ages. Cockram's descriptions are so lush that you'll have no problem immersing yourself in the location, but you won't be prepared for the explosive ending."
Recent non-fiction books include Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edmund Morris new look at “Edison,” one of America’s most prolific geniuses. “Hymns of the Republic-The Story of the Final Year of the American Civil War” is by S.C. Gwynne. Most readers, locally, will recognize him as the author of the Quanah Parker bestselling book, “Empire of the Summer Moon." A new follow-up to the year-long bestselling book by Lisa Wingate “Before We Were Yours” is called “Before and After-The Incredible Real-Life Stories of Orphans Who Survived the Tennessee Children’s Home Society." It is written by co-authors Judy Christie and Lisa Wingate and is based on a reunion of these victims.
As the temperatures have lowered, it is a great time to pick up a book or movie from the Library to stay warm and cozy indoors. In fact, get several of each. Read well and be safe.
