Book some time at the Bandera Library
By Michael Garr, Library Director
Special to the Prophet
You may have missed Santa during his visit to the Bandera Library but there is still time to get into the holiday spirit. The library decorations are rounding into a festive look both inside and outside. The annual Holiday Giving Tree is right in front of the circulation desk and allows patrons to adopt a book and get a tax-deductible receipt for their generous gift to their library.
The Friends of the Library will have their own day that will live infamy, on Saturday, Dec. 7. This will be everyone’s last chance to secure those bargain books for themselves or for possible gifting during the once a month book sale. The library will also have on display its month long tribute to Pearl Harbor and WWII. It’s also the perfect place to watch the Cowboy Christmas Parade down Main Street beginning around 11 a.m. that Saturday. Public restrooms are always available during library hours.
The monthly Thursday Book Club celebrate with their annual holiday party this month but have selected their reading list for 2020. Visit the display of their featured titles near the circulation desk. The January selection is Lewis Buzbee’s “Yellow Lighted Bookshop: A Memoir, A History.” Buzbee, a former bookseller and sales representative, celebrates the unique experience of the bookstore--the smell and touch of books, getting lost in the deep canyons of shelves, and the silent community of readers.
They will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2. Anyone is always welcome to their lively discussions.
Two highly popular romance writers release new books in the same week. Nora Roberts has her final volume in the Chronicles of One series, “Rise of the Magicks.” Library Journal says, “It is a full fantasy, post-apocalyptic version of Robert’s tried and true storytelling mastery. Characters will come full circle, leaving no loose ends in this fast moving, robust story”. The first two books in the series, “Of Blood and Bone” and “Year One” are also available at the Bandera Library. Danielle Steel delivers “Spy” with this dust jacket annotation.” At 18, Alexandra Wickham is presented to King George V and Queen Mary in an exquisite white lace and satin dress her mother has ordered from Paris. With her delicate blond looks, she is a stunning beauty who seems destined for a privileged life. But fate, a world war, and her own quietly rebellious personality lead her down a different path.”
David Baldacci’s “A Minute to Midnight” is the second in the Atlee Pine series. Publisher’s Market says, “Atlee and her assistant, Carol Blum, head back to Atlee's rural hometown in Georgia to see what they can uncover about the traumatic night Mercy, Atlee’s twin sister, was taken and Pine was almost killed. But soon after Atlee begins her investigation, a local woman is found ritualistically murdered, her face covered with a wedding veil--and the first killing is quickly followed by a second bizarre murder. Atlee is determined to continue her search for answers, but now she must also set her sights on finding a potential serial killer before another victim is claimed. But in a small town full of secrets--some of which could answer the questions that have plagued Atlee her entire life--digging deeper into the past could be more dangerous than she realizes”. The Bandera Library will have two copies available and thanks to patrons for adopting these books for the Library. Come see the holiday decorations and continue your good reading habits. In fact, you can make it an early New Year’s resolution.
