Debra Darlene Downing Weathers
October 9, 1953 ~ February 9, 2020
Debra Darlene Downing Weathers passed away Feb. 9, 2020 due to incredibly difficult events related to Lupus Nephites. Her determination was strong, but her body was weak and now she has been released from the battle.
She was born in Austin on Oct. 9, 1953 to Doug Downing and Nancy Reese Downing. After Nancy passed away Doug married Mary Ann (Jones) Downing. Debbie was raised in Devine where she liked hanging out with friends, dancing to music and eating homemade Big Red ice cream. She was Miss Devine in ’69 (really it was 1971, but she liked the rhyme). She was faithful to care for her family and sad to lose so many so young.
In 1984 she married Sam Weathers and was thrilled to be “mom” to Stephanie and Missy. She later bought her own home by the river in Bandera (reminiscent of the “old” days at Hippie Hollow). Happy to call Bandera home, she made many lifelong friends.
Debra’s fun and loving spirit showed in all she did. She enjoyed spending time in Devine with her brother’s big family and friends. She also loved to travel and felt blessed to visit her nephew Austin in North Carolina just before her many days in and out of the hospital. One thing you could count on was every eight to 10 weeks a trip to Austin to get a haircut, visit with her girls and have lunch with her cousin.
She is preceded in death by her parents (mentioned above); her sister Sheri; her brother Byron; and her sister-in-law Rhonda.
She is survived by her daughters Stephanie Chastine (husband David), Melissa Weathers; grandkids Jacob (wife Sydney), Madison, Nathan and Dylan; her brother Mark Downing (wife Theresa); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We would like to thank all the nurses and doctors that cared for her at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Devine, on March 7, at noon.
Donations can be made in her name to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at https://www.rockhall.com/mission
