Cruisin’ the East End
Serving Pipe Creek, Lakehills and Mico

By Vicki L. George
The Bandera Prophet

Out with the old, in with the new! This column has changed its name to better reflect what we do and who we serve. No more “Through the Grapevine.” Instead, we are cruising, always looking for news at our end of the county. We hope you enjoy it and that it serves you well.

TRIVIA TIDBITS
Next week we celebrate Texas Independence Day. On March 2,1836 we officially adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence, severing ties with Mexico, the document being signed by 59 settlers. Thus, we became the Republic of Texas, a sovereign nation. March 2 is an official holiday in Texas.

LAKEHILLS AREA LIBRARY
Early voting is taking place in the library until Friday, Feb. 28, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is the Texas Primary, where each party will select their candidates for the big election in Nov. Voters of all county precincts may vote at any voting location in the county for early voting.
Primary Election Day is March 3, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Each voter must vote in his or her own precinct on that day. The library serves Precinct 203 and the Lakehills Civic Center, 11225 PR 37, serves Precinct 204. The Pipe Creek Fire Department, 1331 FM 1283, serves Precinct 102.
The library is located at 7200 FM 1283.

LAKEHILLS CIVIC CENTER
The Center invites the public to its annual Membership Drive and Dinner on Thursday, March 12, beginning at 6 p.m. with a Meet & Greet. Dinner will be served at 6:30 and includes brisket and beverages. They ask that attendees bring a side dish or a dessert. There will be a short business meeting after dinner and an election of officers. Memberships are $15 per person and renewed in March of each year. The Center is located at 11225 PR 37 in Lakehills.

AG WORKSHOP
The Texas Rural Cooperative and Alamo RC&D have partnered to present a workshop on Friday, March 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Faith Tabernacle, 7789 FM 1283. The presentations are: Rural Cooperatives and You, with guest speaker Annelies Lottmann; 2018 Farm Bill Highlights for you, with a guest speaker; and 2018 Farm Bill and Our Seniors, with guest speaker Alma Aquirre.
Pre-registration is required at alamorcd.org. There will be a free light lunch for Alamo RCD Senior Assistance Program members; with a $10 fee to others.
The public is invited and the presentations are free.

ALAMO RC&D
The Senior Food Pantry will be set up on Friday, Feb. 28, from noon to 3 p.m. It is first come, first served for senior citizens over 60 years. The limit is two bags per family.
All Alamo RC&D events take place at Faith Tabernacle, 7789 FM 1283.

LAKEHILLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
The church hosts the Bread of Life, a free community meal, served every Monday that is also a school day, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
The church is located at 150 Ave. J, in Lakehills.
For more information, go to the church’s website at lakehillsumc.org.

PIPE CREEK FIRE DEPARTMENT
The old fire house at 1331 FM 1283 is used as a bingo hall every Friday evening, starting at 7 p.m. Snacks are available, prizes are paid, the public is invited, and it is fun for all.
