Book some time at the Bandera Library

By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director

The Bandera Public Library would like to thank all of our patrons for doing their part in helping slow the spread of coronavirus in Bandera County. Face masks are required in the library and we ask that everyone who enters the building still practice good hand hygiene and social distance. By staying cautious, we can ensure being able to remain open even during these uncertain times. While you can make an appointment for copy/fax services, book browsing or to use the public access computers, we are still providing curbside services. You can access our few Wi-Fi from the parking lot 24/7. The network is Bandera Public Library and the password is Bandera!
The library is now in week two of our grab-and-go Summer Reading Program for children from preschool to 5th grade. It’s not too late to register, just go to our website https://banderacountylibrary.org/summer-reading-2020 to download the registration form or you can call the library and arrange to pick one up. The theme this year, Imagining Your Story, helps kids use and expand their imagination.
On Thursday, July 2, the Monthly Book Club will be meeting the library’s online meeting room. This month the club is discussing “Beloved” by Toni Morrison. Contact us to get the information on how to join. On Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon, the Country Music Group meets on the back patio to jam. Acoustic instruments only please, but all skill levels are welcome. The Dungeons & Dragons group meets online to play for their weekly session starting at 9am on Saturday until the game concludes (around 1 p.m.). Send an e-mail to banderadnd@gmail.com to join in.
In celebration of Independence Day, come by the library and check out a book on the founding of our nation. This month’s featured titles wall displays our collection of books of biographies, history and historical fiction set during the Revolutionary War.
With the temperatures on their way up again, it’s a good time to crank up the A/C, curl up under a blanket and read a good thriller. “Home Before Dark” by Riley Sager is out this week. The story begins with Maggie Holt returning to her family’s home in rural Vermont. The family only lived in the house for three weeks when in a terrified panic, the family escaped in the middle of the night. That horrifying experience later became a bestselling novel written by her father. Being too young to remember, and generally a skeptic about ghosts and spirits, Maggie returns to her family home to renovate before putting it on the market. She finds relics throughout the house as she is working that suggest a sinister past, but even more unnerving are the strange happenings that seem directly lifted from her father’s book. Maggie cannot decide if the history of the house or the hauntings are more fearsome.
Happy tales, y’all
