Book some time at the Bandera Library

By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director

Hard to believe it is already August. But with warmer temperatures sticking around and the school year fast approaching, take some time to read one of the Bandera Library’s many beach reads. There is something for everyone: murder mysteries, romance and suspense novels. Serve yourself up a drink with a little umbrella and check out our featured wall chock full of sand and sunshine and get away a little.
While the library will continue to be by appointment only, we are extending our weekday hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This will give folks a little extra opportunity to browse the books, get a copy or fax done or use one of the public access computers. Call to make your appointment. Masks are required while in the building.
Beginning Friday, the library’s blog will be updated with an in-depth look at the library’s services, upcoming programming, local history and parts of the library’s collections that you may not know were there. Be on the lookout on our website www.banderacountylibrary.org for new posts every week. Also new at the library is the monthly newsletter now available in Spanish. If you or anyone you know is interested in receiving the once-a-month email in either English or Spanish give the library call and sign up.
As a reminder you can also sign up for a library card on the library catalog website. This will allow you to access the digital content such as eBooks, audiobooks and digital magazines. When you use your online library account you can also set up alerts for new books by your favorite authors and reserve titles. Library cards are free to Bandera County residents with proof of residency. Non-residents can also get a card for a small fee. If you have ever checked out an item from the Library, you already have an account and do not need to sign up for a new one. Any of the Library staff can help you get signed in.
This week the Monthly Book Club will be meeting via Zoom on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 10 a.m. and discussing “The Secrets we Kept,” by Lara Prescott. The story is set during the height of the Cold War where two secretaries at the CIA are pulled from their jobs and given a secret mission. They are to smuggle a copy of the novel “Doctor Zhivago” by Boris Pasternak out of the Soviet Union where it is banned from being published. One of the women is a talented spy, and her partner must learn and learn fast all the skills needed to pull off this mission. If you are interested in joining the discussion, call and ask to be added to the list.
Happy tales, y’all.
