Labor Day is a public holiday in honor of working people. It is observed on the first Monday in September each year in the US and Canada and on May 1 in other countries. It has always been celebrated with parades and barbecues.
It was originally promoted by labor unions in New York City to celebrate the American labor movement and was made an official holiday by President Grover Cleveland in 1887.
GRANDPARENTS DAY is a holiday celebrated in various countries, with official recognition in some.
In the United States, Marian McQuade is recognized as the founder of Grandparents Day. McQuade made it her goal to educate youth about the important contributions seniors have made throughout history. She also urged the youth to "adopt" a grandparent, not just for one day a year, but rather for a lifetime.
In 1977, Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents' Day and, in 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. The statute cites the day's purpose: "...to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.”
We wish all grandparents a blessed Grandparents Day on Sunday, Sept. 13!
ALAMO RC&D will distribute food on Thursday, August 20, at Faith Tabernacle, 7789 FM 1283. The food is for senior citizens who need it and are pre-registered at alamorcd.org.
It is by appointment only and seniors over 55 must pre-register online at alamorcd.org or by calling or texting 210-548-9248. Reservations are required to provide curbside service, according to Covid-19 protocols.
The organization asks for donations and you can donate money on the website: alamorcd.org.
The organization needs volunteers to help with the picking up, the sorting, and the distributing of the food. To volunteer, or to sign up, email or text: [email protected] or 210-548-9248.
LAKEHILLS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, located at 150 Ave. J in Lakehills, offers a free meal on Mondays, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. While donations are always welcome, there is no charge for the food. To comply with Covid-19 guidelines, the meal will be handed out curbside, first come, first served, outside the fellowship hall.
Between the Back to School Bash at the Lakehills Civic Center and the Western Heritage Cowboy Church on FM 1283, more that 700 kiddos were given school supplies. Our community thanks all sponsors and contributors for meeting this need.
FAMILY HOME GARDEN PROJECT is hosted by Lakehills Civic Center board member Henry Wolanski, to help people raise their own food. He does a live chat every Saturday at 10 a.m. and welcomes gardeners and aspiring gardeners to check in at the website: familyhomegarden.weebly.com.

LAKE AND RIVER
On August 17, Medina Lake is at 56.6 per cent capacity. The lake level is 1042.89 feet, which is down 21.31 feet. The BMA has opened the gates.
The Medina River has a flow of 0.0 cfs in Bandera, standing 2.85 feet deep at the gage. Without flow, E. coli can increase so that is might be unsafe to swim or fish.
Please send your Lakehills, Pipe Creek and Mico news to me by email at [email protected] or call me at 210-563-1186 and leave a message.
Until next time, “¡Vaya con Dios!”
