Our upside-down world has caused many changes in the Alamo Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc. Where Alamo RC&D once had many programs for our senior citizens, to get them together to socialize, to exercise, and to learn new hobbies, the organization then had to focus on Covid-19 issues beginning in March of this year.
With the focus on Covid, the Alamo RC&D had canceled all their face-to-face senior events. To avoid physical contact, they require all seniors, who are 55 or older and need assistance, to pre-register with the organization in order to receive their help. To do that, go to their website at alamorcd.org. Seniors can also email [email protected] or text 210-548-9248.
However, Alamo RC&D is still providing food to pre-registered seniors at the semi-monthly Food Distributions held at Faith Tabernacle, located at 7789 FM 1283. These are Drive and Drop Senior Curbside Pantry events whereby participants will be given an appointment when they register. When they arrive, they must remain in their cars and the food will be brought out to the vehicle. The next Food Distribution will take place on Thursday, Oct. 1. The second Food Distribution in October will take place on Thursday, Oct. 15.
The struggle to provide food increases daily. All grant money ended as of Aug. 31. The organization depends on actual food donations, monetary donations, and the help of many volunteers. Monetary donations are best done online and are greatly needed.
Volunteers and food donations are needed the day before the distributions: Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 1:30 - 4 p.m.; and on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 1:30 - 4 p.m. Volunteers are also needed for clean-up after the distributions, until 6 p.m.
Alamo RC&D has provided over $72,500 in food and other services. That includes $66,000 for food and over $5,000 in economic relief through August this year. The bills covered doctors, prescriptions, utilities, and more. They served 334 seniors, in 156 families, who relied on them to eat and to cover those expenses that are difficult for them to pay.
Even though Alamo RC&D’s funds have dried up for relief, they want seniors, who are 60 years and older, to know that the Alamo Area Council of Governments has received $8 Million in CARES Act Grant funding. This money will help seniors and veterans during the rest of this year. Those seniors and our veterans, who need assistance of any kind, can contact 210-477-3275 or 866-231-4922.
All Alamo RC&D programs are free and serve Bexar and surrounding counties, including Bandera County.
Alamo RC&D is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, that has served the central Texas area since 1993. To learn more, to donate, to volunteer, or to seek assistance, go to alamorcd.org or email [email protected] or call 210-548-9248. They can be found on Facebook and Twitter.
