The latest at the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
Twinkle lights are all over. The holiday season is in full gear and the Bandera Library is ready to celebrate. This Saturday, Dec. 5, is the Friends of the Library monthly book fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pick up holiday presents and support your local library at the same time. The book fair will be the perfect opportunity to get ready for this year’s celebration of Jolabokaflod (pronounced yo-la-bok-a-flot), which translates to “Yule Book Flood.” The tradition dates back to World War II in Iceland when most goods were rationed, and international imports were heavily restricted by the Icelandic government. Up until recently, Jolabokaflod was only celebrated in Nordic countries, but the tradition is gaining traction all over the world. Families and friends exchange books instead of socks or pajamas and then spend the evening reading by the fire. Sign us up!
Local author and Bandera County resident, Joanne Kukanza Easley was recently named the recipient of the 2020 Indie Author Project. Her novel, Sweet Jane, was the winner in the adult fiction category. If you have not had the chance to read this moving story of woman’s struggle to leave a dark past behind, come by the Library and check out a copy. Joanne Easley will be doing an author visit and book signing in the spring so stay tuned for details.
The Monthly Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m., on the back patio, weather permitting. The group will be discussing “The Great Alone” by Kristin Hannah about a family whose patriarch abruptly moves them to a remote corner of Alaska after returning from Vietnam a changed man. At first, the move seems like the answer to all their problems. However, as the long, harsh winter approaches, the mother and daughter soon realize they are completely on their own.
The library is open Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will be adding Saturday hours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., beginning on Dec. 5. Masks are required while here in the library. Appointments are required for computer use and for notary services.
Happy tales, y’all.
