The city’s third annual Fish For Fun kids event will be Wednesday, Dec. 16. With a grant, sponsorships and donations made by Zebco, Eagle Claw, Atmos and Bandera Electric Coop, city staff purchased 100 Kylo Ren Star Wars light up rods, which will be given away to the children who attend the event.
Hondo National Bank has donated water bottles and 100 beanies to help keep the little ones warm, and Mizfitz Emporium ordered 100 pairs of gloves. In addition, full tackle with hooks and decals will be provided, as well as free hot dogs and chips, which will be cooked by Deputy Willie Smith and other volunteers.
Texas Parks and Wildlife will drop 578 Winter Rainbow Trout in the river at Bandera City Park that day, sometime between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The event will begin after school at around 3:30 p.m.
“I am hoping to have a fire pit or two down there to warm up to and make this event even bigger and better,” City Secretary Jill Shelton said. “It has become a city event as the staff at City Hall all get excited and try to pull together more and more donations for these kiddos. The joy on their faces even if they just come for their free fishing pole makes it all worth it.”
Participants are reminded to maintain social distancing. Fishing after the event is encouraged because rainbow trout are unable to survive in Texas after the winter. The daily bag limit is five trout.
Anyone who would like to help sponsor the event or make a donation is urged to contact Shelton at 830-796-3765.
