Local sports still going strong into the new year

Even with Christmas break still happening, the local high school sports scene has a lot going on.
Boys and girls basketball and the start of soccer season are the usual staples this time of year.
With no basketball tournaments this season due to CoVid, many teams are picking up games where and when they can. Because of this, always check to make sure the scheduled games are actually happening and haven't been cancelled.

Boys Basketball
After a two-week hiatus due to Covid cancellations and Christmas break, the Bulldog varsity got back in the win column to even their season at 6-6 with a 50-33 road win over Fox Tech on Monday.
Bandera opened up strong and took a 12-4 lead into the second quarter, extended their advantage to 21-12 at the half and were never headed on their way to the win.
“It wasn’t pretty today, but we did a good job of working hard defensively and coming out with a win after a really long layoff. I was proud of the way our guys came back and played, but we have a lot of work to do and have to continue to work our way back into shape after having so much time away from the gym.
We have three tough games left in non-district that will continue to prepare us for district and I’m excited to see the improvement we make over the next two weeks," coach Brady Keane said.
The Bulldogs transition game and rebounding on both ends allowed the Bulldogs to limit Fox Tech to three single digit quarters and control the tempo for the entire contest.
The duo of Luke Barnett and Tyler Moore combined for 25 points to lead the way for Bandera and Lukas Jackson nabbed 12 boards to lead that stat column.
Bandera will host the Hondo Owls this Thursday in the last home game of 2020 before finishing non-district play on the road the following week against Llano and Pearsall.
Thursday's games are at 10 and 11:30 a.m.
District will open at home on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021 against Comal Davenport.

Girls Basketball
Unlike their male counterparts, the varsity Lady Bulldogs were busy in the first part of the Christmas break, going 2-1 with wins over Young Women's Leadership Academy (38-28) and Pearsall (40-34) that sandwiched a 45-33 loss to Comfort.
The Lady Bulldogs travelled to Uvalde yesterday and returned with a 34-26 loss in their last game of 2020 and are off until Jan. 2, 2021, when the varsity will face S.A. Kennedy on the road.
All three teams will open district play on Tuesday,  Jan. 5,  at the Boerne Lady Greyhounds.

Girls Soccer
New head coach, Keith Kuenzel, has had a long wait for his debut at the helm of the Lady Bulldog soccer program.
The team had their first two matches on the calender cancelled so tentatively they will open the season on the road against the Burnett Lady Bulldogs on Jan. 5, 2021, and follow that with another road trip to Kingsville on Jan. 8 to take on H.M. King.
Their home opener will be Senior Night on Jan. 20 against Somerset and the team will continue their road warrior status with three more away games until returning on  Feb. 5 against UPREP, depending on any cancellations and/or schedule changes.

Boys Soccer
Bulldog soccer scrimmaged the 6A Brandeis Bronco JV squad to open their season at home Monday, playing the larger school tough in a 1-0 loss.
Unlike the Lady Bulldogs, the boys will have a five game homestand, starting Jan. 5, 2021, as they host Austin Eastside  before hitting the road on Jan. 26 against the Poteet Aggies. There is the possibility of a tourney at Canyon Lake on Jan. 14-16 but that is still tentative.
