Girls Varsity
After suffering a 34-26 loss to Uvalde to end 2020, the Lady Bulldog varsity opened up 2021 on a high note with a 44-37 win over Pleasanton on Saturday, Jan. 2.
The contest against the Lady Eagles was a pickup game as S.A. Kennedy cancelled due to CoVid related concerns.
Bandera surged out to a big 32-13 lead in the first two quarters with 23 points coming in the second, their best of the season so far.
"The patience shown by the girls on the offensive end allowed for them to take open shots that started falling early. Along with exceptional offense, we played defense well and rebounded well preventing second chances," coach Kierstyn Sells said.
The second half was a different story with Pleasanton taking charge of the floor in the third quarter. Bandera started giving up turnovers and were missing shots that were falling for them in the first half.
Pleasanton's comeback bid fell short as Bandera picked it up later in the fourth quarter to hold onto a 44-37 win.
Brianna Stimmell led Lady Bulldog scoring  with 10, Samantha Kennedy added 7, Madison Leal scored 6 and Summer Haby knocked down 5 points.
Thr trio of Estella Calderon, Hannah Edwards, and Elizabeth MacNeil each scored 4 points and Izabell Kennedy contributed 2 points in the win.
Next up on the (somewhat tentative) schedule is the district home opener on Friday as the Lady Bulldogs host Wimberley. Games are scheduled for 5 and 6:30 p.m.

Boys Varsity
After not playing and/or being on the road for a two week stretch, the well rested varsity Bulldogs ended 2020 with a decisive 57-37 win over the Hondo Owls at home on Dec. 31.
"We got off to a slow start offensively and struggled with turnovers in the first half, but used a strong defensive performance to build a small lead in the early going," coach Brady Keane said.
Thanks to their play on the defensive end, the Bulldogs had a 3 point lead at the half, 20-17.
In the second half, Bandera put the game into overdrive, outscoring the Owls by a hefty 37-20 margin to get the 57-37 win.
"An offensive surge, featuring a flurry of transition baskets from the trio of Gunnar Winkler, Luke Barnett and Tyler Moore, helped us late in the third," Keane said.
Liam DiMarchi and Lukas Jackson dominated the boards with DiMarchi pulling down 16 rebounds and Jackson nabbing 10.
“We got off to a slow start offensively, but this is the fourth straight game I feel like we’ve done a really good job defensively. I’m really proud of the way our guys played today, defensively, controlling the rebounding battle and we took advantage of our opportunities in transition.
It was a good win to close out 2020, and we’re looking forward to continuing to improve next week before getting started with district play.” Keane said.
The Bulldogs have one game left, a road date Friday against Pearsall, before opening district play on Senior Night against Comal Davenport on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at home.

Girls
The Lady Bulldog's varsity season finally got underway last night as Bandera hit the road to take on the always tough Burnet Lady Bulldogs. Bandera battled hard, but came up on the wrong end of a 5-0 score.
Bandera's game scheduled for Friday in Kingsville has been cancelled and unless a pickup match or two can be arranged, Bandera will not play again until Jan. 20 against Somerset on Senior Night at Bulldog Stadium.

Boys
Tueday's home match against Austin Eastside Memorial was cancelled due to CoVid protocols in Austin and Travis County. Basically, teams there are only allowed to play district teams at this time for the season.
The varsity Bulldogs do have a scheduled home match against Poteet on Tuesday, Jan. 12, and the status of the Canyon Lake tournament next Thursday through Saturday is still uncertain.
The JV Bulldogs Saturday home match against S. A. Clemens is still on as of this writing, start time is 11 a.m., see you on the pitch.
