The Bandera Bulldog varsity basketball team opened district play last week at 1-1 with a double overtime loss at home to Comal Davenport Tuesday and a 76-57 win on  the road at Canyon Lake Thursday evening.

Davenport
Varsity
In probably the most exciting game for the Bulldog basketball program since the 60-58 loss to Wharton in the 2013-2014 playoffs, Bandera lost their district opener at home to Comal Davenport in a double overtime thriller, 65-63.
Bandera took a single point lead into the lockerroom at the half, but both teams opened up offensively in the second half with Davenport outscoring Bandera, 31-30, to send the game into OT.
Davenport scored on a last second heave from outside the arc at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. It was just the last of six 3-pointers they hit in the fourth.
Coach Brady Keane was quick to point out that defensive effort and the transition game by Luke Barnett, Tyler Moore, Gunnar Winkler, Liam DeMarchi and Lukas Jackson, were key in keeping the game close in the last half, even with Davenport's three point run.
Both teams traded baskets in the first overtime, scoring 8 points each to force another overtime, where the Wolves outscored the Bulldogs, 8-6 to get the win.
“It’s hard to walk away from a game like that with a loss after the intensity and fight our players showed from start to finish. Aside from about three minutes of game time, we played a really good game on both ends of the court. But, I’m proud of the way we battled even when things weren’t going our way, that says a lot about our players. Losing a game in that fashion can either break you or motivate you, and I’m extremely confident that our kids will respond positively and come out with an increased hunger for success moving forward," Keane said.
The varsity Bulldogs will host 16th ranked, Fredericksburg, Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. and then go to 6th ranked, Boerne on Friday.

Canyon Lake
Varsity

The Bulldog varsity evened up their district mark to 1-1 with a much needed 76-57 road win over the Canyon Lake Hawks Thursday evening.
Bandera jumped out to an early advantage and stretched the lead to as much as 18 points in the second quarter, with Liam Dimarchi scoring 10 of his 19 points on the night in the period. Canyon Lake battled back before the buzzer to make it a five point game, 41-36, at the buzzer.
Bandera turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, holding the Hawks to 21 points, while extending their lead by 14 more points for the half.
“It was nice to see the focus that our team had in practice on Wednesday after the loss Tuesday night and I was proud of the way it carried over to the game. Aside from the last few minutes of the second quarter, it was one of our most complete performances of the season. But we still have a lot of room to grow and a lot of mistakes to eliminate, especially before playing two of the best teams in the state next week. We’re excited for the challenge and look forward to continue working and getting better," Keane said.
