Wimberley
Due to a lack of available players on the JV and Freshmen squads, the only game on tap Tuesday night was the varsity contest between Wimberley and Bandera. A sparse crowd of 51 people, not counting players, coaches and support staff, watched an up tempo, physical contest that saw Bandera fall behind early and mount a valiant comeback bid that fell short in a 63-51 loss.
The Bulldogs did play with a short bench, dressing just seven players, with the starting five getting the majority of the minutes and as fatigue set in, Bandera sent the Texans to the stripe late in the game to help Wimberley maintain the lead.
Bandera's Luke Barnett was on a hot streak, scoring 19 points and Liam DeMarchi recorded another double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, his fourth in five games, with Boerne the only team to keep him in check through the first round of district.
“I was disappointed in the result Tuesday night, but I was so proud of the way our guys competed and battled with a tough, physical team from start to finish. We had some guys who didn’t step off the court and we battled through some runs to give ourselves a chance at the end. I know we’ll be motivated to have the two best practices of our season Wednesday and Thursday as we get ready for an important rematch against Davenport," coach Brady Keane said.
That game against Davenport will mark the start of the second round of district play.
At the time of this writing, Boerne is 5-0, Fredericksburg is 4-1, Wimberley is 2-2 with Bandera and Davenport at 1-4. Canyon Lake is 1-3 and will play Wimberley tomorrow to get the first round finished.
Davenport beat the Bulldogs in their first ever district game, 65-63, in a double overtime thiller in Bandera to start the first round.

Davenport
Varsity
Bandera started the second round of District 28-4A play on the road against Comal Davenport Friday night looking for payback for a 65-63 double overtime loss the Wolves handed Bandera to start district.
Bandera once again trailed early and found themselves in an 18 point hole before hunkering down and battling back in the second half, closing to within four points in the last two minutes but came up on the short end of a 68-60 final score.
“We dug ourselves into an early hole, and then fought and clawed our way back into striking distance. I was proud of our effort in the second half and our ability to give ourselves a chance in the final two minutes. We just have to continue to get better and not put ourselves in such an early hole moving forward. We have another big game Tuesday night and we’ll be back in the gym over the next two days fixing our mistakes and getting ready to bounce back at home,” coach Brady Keane said.
Keane pointed out that the second half push was made by the entire teams high-intensity defensive effort and the offensive play of Tyler Moore and Luke Barnett to go along with rebounding on both ends of the floor by Lukas Jackson.
The Bulldogs are now 1-5 in district and will really need to pick it up over the next four games if they want to make a playoff appearance this year. They are playing good basketball, but the trend of one not so good quarter, usually early, is not helping their bid to make the postseason.
The Bulldogs will host Canyon Lake Tuesday night with games starting at 5 p.m.

Halle Rios continued her goal scoring streak with six goals to go along with three assists.
Ashlyn Brown scored the other three goals and assisted on two of Rios's scores.
Jetta Martinez was also credited with an assist on a Rios score.
"We had several freshmen players,Emily Presa, Brenda Mendoza, Miranda Fowler and Yesinia Meza-Sanchez, gain valuable experience and significant playing time and perform well in their first starts.
Our defense played very hard, but allowed two first half goals. However the defensive play improved in the second half, shutting the Cardinals out. Maci Morrison tended goal and played an outstanding game, allowing only two goals on the night with 14 saves.

Defensively, outstanding play by Donavan Brown, Wilber Diaz, Rodrigo Gutierrez-Gonzales, Isaiah Moreno and Logan Sadler allowed goalkeepers Bailey Cox and Reese Mazurek to split the shutout. Both stopped three shots each for the contest.
