Cruisin’ the East End
Serving Pipe Creek, Lakehills and Mico
By Vicki L. George
The Bandera Prophet
This week we celebrate Texas independence. On March 2, 1836 we officially adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence, severing ties with Mexico, the document being signed by 59 settlers. Thus, we became the Republic of Texas, a sovereign nation. March 2 is an official holiday in Texas.
The desire for Texas independence burns in the hearts of many to this day. Since the late 1990s the support for sovereignty has grown. It is now centered in the Texas Nationalist Movement. The slogan is TEXIT, as in Texas Exit, seceding from the Union. Over 400,000 members strong, you can learn more at their website, tnm.me. They can be found on Facebook under Texasnatmov.
Happy Texas Independence Day!
