Baseball
Former Bandera Bulldog Nick Salas is one of 17 returners to the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers baseball team.
Iowa Wesleyan, located in Mt. Pleasant Iowa, is a Division 3 school and plays in the nine member, St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Salas, a first baseman, hit two homers in just 16 trips to the plate last season before CoVid ended the Tigers season. In 2019, he hit eight dingers and had 32 RBIs, while making the All-Conference list.
He also is tied for seventh place on the Tigers career home run list with 12 as he returns for his senior year.
Alamo Heights
Bandera hosted the 5A Alamo Heights Mules Tuesday night and that resulted in a 12 -1 loss for the Bulldogs.
The game was scoreless for the first two innings and the visitors went up 3-0 in the top of the third, scored a single run in the fifth before erupting for 8 runs in the sixth. Bandera could only muster one run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game to an early end.
Brock Cardenas and Riley Hailey split the piching duties for Bandera with Cardenas taking the loss.
The Mules had 12 hits with no errors and Bandera recorded 5 hits and three errors on the evening.
Soccer
Girls
Tuesday saw the Fredericksburg Lady Billies come to Bandera to take on the Lady 'Dogs at Bulldog Stadium.
In a physical first half, Fred charged out to a 4-1 lead at the break on their way to a 7-3 win.
Jasmine Thane made 14 saves on 21 shots and Hannah Edwards, Isabel Kennedy and Halena Rios scored for Bandera.
Coach Keith Kneuzel cited the good defensive play of Lauren Benedict, Courtney Dowda, Yadhira Mendoza and Maci Morrison in the backfield.
Boys
Bandera's Bulldogs hosted the Fredericksburg Billies after the girls contest on Tuesday evening and suffered a 10-1 loss at the hand of the visitors.
Felix Diaz scored the only goal for the Bulldogs and coaches commented on the play defensively of Josh Short, Blaise Salazar, Bryan Gonzalez and Isaiah Martinez.
Bailey Cox and Bryan Gonzalez combined for 21 saves on 31 shots for Bandera.
Tennis
Bandera Tennis had a good day at the East Central Invitational earlier this week,with the very young squad, with many freshmen and sophomores, making major strides in the right direction.
"We came away with a lot of big wins and huge improvements for some of our younger kids. Skylar Gunn came away with two wins in Girls Singles.
Our biggest winners of the day were Girls Singles player, Candy Martinez and the Boys Doubles team of Ethan Ledesma/Cyrus Mendez, who are Consolation champs of their respective divisions," coach Ginger Frye said.
Both the JV and varsity teams will travel to Uvalde next Thursday.
