The Latest at the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
It’s hard to believe April will soon be over. Have you made any summer plans? What about your kids or grandkids? Registration for the Summer Reading Program has begun. Stop by the library to get a form or you can download one from our website www.banderacountylibrary.org.
The Summer Reading Program’s theme this year is Tails and Tales. We will be highlighting stories featuring animals. Kids ages 4-12 are welcome to sign up. The goal of the Summer Reading Program is to promote reading for fun for children and to help kids retain what they have learned during the school year. The fun begins on Tuesdays from June 28 until Aug. 3, from 10 - 11:30 a.m. You don’t have to attend every single week in order to participate.
As with most public programs, the library needs volunteers to pitch in. Contact us if you would join the fun this summer. We would like to thank BEC Foundation for their financial support of the Summer Reading Program. With their help, we will provide arts and crafts, snacks, prizes and books to each child participating. Thank you BEC!
New titles this week include a new John Grisham novel titled Sooley. Samuel Sooleyman is a 17-year-old kid from South Sudan who has been given the chance of a lifetime. He and his basketball teammates are invited to participate in an exhibition tournament in the United States. Scouts from dozens of colleges will be there and he has an opportunity to show off his remarkable athletic ability. While he has speed, agility and a jaw dropping vertical jump, the rest of his game is less than. In the middle of the tournament, Samuel receives horrific news. A civil war has broken out in his home country. His father has been killed, his sister is missing, and his mother and brothers are living in a refugee camp. Partially out of sympathy, the coach at North Carolina Central gives him a scholarship but benches him until he has had a chance to hone his skills. But one thing that ‘Sooley’, as his teammates have nicknamed him, has that the rest of his team does not is a serious level of determination. Working out tirelessly and spending the wee hours of the morning in the gym working on shots, Sooley soon comes off the bench hoping to lead his team. Sooley isn’t just working for a trophy. He’s determined to use his game to bring him family to the United States and to safety.
The library is still offering free lamination services for your COVID vaccination card. Just swing by and the staff will handle the rest.
