PENTECOST and SHAVUOT
This year, the Jewish festival of Shavuot, Monday, May 17, precedes the date of the Christian celebration of Pentecost, Sunday, May 23.
Shavuot, also called Feast of Weeks, will begin at sundown on May 16 and lasts 24 hours. It is one of the three pilgrim festivals of Exodus 23 and Leviticus 23. It commemorates the giving of the Law, Torah, to Moses. It occurs 50 days after Passover. The book of Ruth is traditionally read on this day.
Pentecost is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word. Sometimes described as the Birth of the Church, it is the day Christians celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus after His ascension, depicted in Acts 2. It is held on the seventh Sunday after Easter.
As it is a festive time for both religions, we wish all a Happy Shavuot and a Joyful Pentecost.
