The Latest at the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
It’s June already? Let’s get you caught up on everything going on at the Bandera Library. Thursday, June 3, at 10 a.m., the Monthly Book Club will be meeting on the back patio to discuss “The Caves of Périgord” by Martin Walker. A young American woman is working in a London auction house when an unmarked, mysterious package arrives on her desk. The package brought in by a British officer contains a 17,000-year-old fragment of a cave painting. The officer’s father, a World War II hero, left the fragment to his son on his death. This cave painting holds the potential to be as significant a discovery as the world-famous cave paintings in Lascaux, France. Unsurprisingly, the fragment’s discovery drums up huge publicity and draws the attention of the French authorities. The American woman, the British officer and a French art historian embark on a journey to find the cave in the ancient region of Périgord. The search in the stunning hills and rivers of Périgord sets the stage for three stories including the harrowing experience of the British officer’s father who lands in Nazi-occupied France to organize the Resistance and the prehistoric artist who painted the caves.
On Saturday, June 5, the Friends of the Library will host their monthly book fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come by for new and gently used books from all genres. All items are available by donation and the proceeds support the library. Father’s Day is only a couple of weeks away so remember your old man and get him a good book. Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. is also when our intrepid Dungeons and Dragons group meets in the Downstair Meeting Room. Email [email protected] for more information.
We are in the final weeks of registration for the Summer Reading Program. This year we will host kids ages 4 to 12 for games, arts and crafts, music and of course reading! Adults and teens may also participate in our inaugural Summer Reading Challenge. Stop by the library or download the categories and the reading log. Whoever reads the most books from the different categories will win a $25 gift card to the Dough Joe. It is a great way to diversify your reading and check out some new authors. The librarians will help you find books if you are having a hard time picking which one.
The Bandera Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is still available for checkouts and business services. We are requested those who are not fully vaccinated to wear a mask while in the library. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Check out our website www.banderacountylibrary.org for all up-to-date information.
Happy tales, y’all.
