The Bandera Prophet
Football
After the good showing in the Popsicle Bowl intra-squad scrimmage, coaches, players and the Bulldog faithful were eager to see how the teams would fare against an opponent that wasn’t a Bandera Bulldog as the JV and varsity took on La Pryor's Bulldogs Friday evening.
JV
Bandera's Bulldogs edged out La Pryor's Bulldogs in a defensive struggle.
Bandera's only score came early as Jake Lannon scored on a 75-yard romp on Bandera's first play of the day and the Bulldog defense did their job, holding La Pryor scoreless for the duration.
Lannon, along with Adan Ramos and Dylan Gherman, were the offensive sparkplugs for Bandera and on the other side of the ball, coaches cited the play of Eric Straeter and Carson Powers.
Varsity
Following the JV's lead, the varsity defense held La Pryor scoreless and the offense scored on four occasions showing the Bandera faithful a promise of a good season.
The varsity took four plays to score on a long run, 43 yards, by Luke Barnett. Barnett would score again later on a 39 yard rush.
Barnett's partners in the backfield, RBs Brock Johnson and Jesse Cardenas, took some snaps at QB in addition to the starter, Tyler Moore.
The position looks to be well in hand with the QB by commitee going 14-19 for 263 yards.
Cardenas hit Zackary Lowhorn on a long pass for the third Bandera score and Moore, seeing action for the first time this season, found WR Alex Dirck for an 18 yard score.
Lannon and Ramos, the JV running backs, also got in for a few carries in the varsity tilt.
With the the ground game gaining almost 200 yards and the passing game in good shape, Bandera's now balanced offense will test the Natalia Mustangs on Thursday.
With the ability to score points and with the support of the Bulldog defensive corps, the Bulldogs will be in the thick of things when they travel to Poteet to open non-district play on Aug. 27.
Cross-Country
Bandera XC will open their season Friday with a road trip to Johnson City followed by a split trip on Aug. 28 with the some runners going to Dripping Springs and other team members participating in the Medina Cross-Country Relay run.
Volleyball
Varsity
The Lady Bulldogs fell to 0-2 in non-tournament play with a loss to Hondo Tuesday night in Bandera.
Bandera lost the first two sets by a 25-16 score and pushed the envelope trying to extend the match in the third set, but came up on the short end of a 25-22 decision.
No stats were received by deadline.
Bandera will head to Devine for the Arabian's tourney Thursday and Saturday.
