Optimist Club meets, recognizes students of the month

Ray Blanco, Assistant Principal of Bandera High School, was present to introduce students of the month Stella Brown and Matthew Staton.  
Stella is a senior at Bandera High. Stella hopes to attend Tarleton State University, majoring in ag business and commerce. She hopes to work in agriculture sales. Stella has attended Bandera County schools her entire life, from elementary school in Medina to Bandera in the sixth grade. 
Matthew is also a senior at BHS. Matthews’ interest is in astrophysics. He plans to study aerospace engineering in college and is hoping for acceptance and a scholarship to MIT. He has lived in Bandera and attended Bandera schools since the sixth grade.   

In other business, Jason McKenzie, manager of energy services for BEC, was the guest speaker. BEC serves seven counties. It has been in operation here since 1938 when electric power was first brought to Bandera County. BEC has brought solar power and high speed internet to the community in response to members’ needs and requests. BEC is providing programs to help members increase their energy savings, which will allow the limited electric resources to meet the needsof the future.  
BEC has a program called Apolloware, which includes a home energy audit, and a monitoring system to allow members to see where their energy use is. BEC can finance energy improvements for its members for 10 years with no interest with this program. sponsored by the USDA.The program has a monthly cost for the audit and monitoring equipment that is generally offset by the savings realized from the program.  
The solar and wind power resources of BEC also increased the allowableelectric use BEC members are permitted from the state power grid. BEC has plans to increase solar power, and to add wind power and geothermal power to its resources. 
The next Optimist Club meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., on Nov. 17, at China Bowl on Main Street.
