Bulldogs open season with home scrimmage
By Brady Keane
BHS Mens Varsity Basketball Coach
The Bandera varsity basketball team tipped off the 2021-2022 season with the first scrimmage of the year Saturday and showed a lot of positives in an impressive showing against Navarro. The Bulldogs outscored the Panthers 55-30 in four quarters of action, most notably exploding for a 21-point second quarter to create some breathing room in the early going.
All seven varsity players contributed on the scoreboard for Bandera, and the Bulldogs held Navarro to eight or fewer points in all four live quarters.
Senior Ryan Perez scored a team-high 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals for Bandera while junior Noah Barnett added nine points, eight rebounds, six steals and three assists. Freshman Elijah Salas had seven points, two steals and an assist, sophomore Cale Barnett had seven points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist, junior Kayden Brown had six points, six steals, four rebounds and four assists, senior Joe Kennedy had four points, seven rebounds and three steals and junior Gavin Ortiz had three points, five steals and three assists.
Bandera will officially open the regular season on Tuesday Nov. 16 at home against Harper on Little Bulldog Night, when participants in the 2021 Bandera Basketball Camp are invited to wear their camp t-shirts. Campers will get into the game for free and will be recognized at halftime of the varsity boys game.
Coach’s Note: “We did a good job of playing with a lot of energy on defense. We were able to convert turnovers into transition points, and that played a big role in the strong first two quarters Saturday. It was a good first scrimmage, but we’re looking forward to cleaning a few things up and continuing to build on the positives as we move on to what should be a couple of good challenges against two ranked teams in Lytle
and Pleasanton on Tuesday.”

At the subvarsity level, Bandera played with a combined JV and Freshmen team and was able to work through what was the first high school playing experience for a majority of the roster. Navarro jumped all over the Bulldogs in the first set of two live quarters before Bandera was able to settle down and give the Panthers some problems in the second half.
Bandera regrouped and fell just 21-18 in the second set of live quarters t hanks to a strong shooting effort from Hank Pate, who knocked down five 3 pointers and finished with 17 points overall. Freshmen Jace Knowl es and Layne Bourgeios knocked down a 3pointer apiece for the Bulldogs as well.
Coach’s Note: “It took us a while to get going on Saturday at the JV level but there were some promising things for us to build on over the course of the next week as we get ready to start the regular season. We had a handful of freshmen step up and do well in their first high school scrimmage, but we have to continue to adjust to the speed of the game, handle the ball better and apply more pressure defensively.”
After the scrimmages, there was an alumni game for prior Bulldog players.
Despite a game-high 15-point effort from Justin Raitz, the Alumni Blue team was able to edge out a 36-34 victory over the Alumni White team in the Inaugural Bandera Boys Basketball Alumni Game on Saturday afternoon.
