After entering halftime trailing by a 26-11 score, the Bandera varsity boys basketball team stormed back and outscored Boerne Geneva 33-15 in the final 16 minutes to secure a thrilling, 44-41, win Tuesday night to remain unbeaten on their home floor.
The slow offensive start paired with some hot first-half shooting from Geneva contributed to the Bulldogs digging themselves into a significant early hole.
After regrouping during the halftime break, Bandera turned up the intensity on defense and used their energy on the defensive end to get the offense going. The Bulldogs allowed the Eagles just 15 points in the final two quarters, including five in the fourth.
The comeback was a total team effort. The rally was significantly aided by the contributions of several players off the bench, including sophomore guard Cale Barnett, who knocked down a 3-point shot to tie the game at 40-40 before senior Tyler Moore made the go-ahead basket on a fast break in the final minute.
Bandera knocked down a pair of free throws and had a pair of defensive stops as time expired to secure the victory.
Moore scored 14 and added 11 boards for his second consecutive double double and Noah Barnett added 9 boards and 3 assists in the win.
Coach’s Notes: “I’m so proud of the way our guys never gave up and fought back to get a win on their home court. It wasn’t pretty, but we found a way, and that’s what’s important early in the season. The
most exciting part was seeing how our team fought for each other a nd celebrated each other’s successes. We will have some tough competition this weekend in tournament play thoug h, and have to refocus and be ready to go.”
Bandera scoring:
T. Moore, 14, N. Barnett, 12, Joseph Kennedy, 4, Ryan Perez, 4, Cale Barnett, 4, Kayden Brown 4, Gavin Ortiz, 2
