During an evening of recognitions, Bandera City Council members on Tuesday recognized O.S.T. owners Gwen and Rick Janes, commemorating the restaurant’s 100th anniversary, and a century of continuous service. Council members and Bandera Marshal Will Dietrich also presented an award to the Bandera Lions Club, for “a memorable and noteworthy Nightmare on Maple experience.”
Dietrich said the organization, composed entirely of volunteers, has time and time again put together a successful booth for the community. Representing the Lions Club, Terry West said this is their fourth year participating in the Halloween bash, calling it their labor of love.
“Hereafter, the Marshal's Office Award will be known as The Lions Club Award, and will be presented to the individual or group that goes above and beyond to make Nightmare on Maple Street the scariest family-friendly event in the Hill Country,” Dietrich said.
Offering thanks to the council, city staff and the Economic Development Corporation, American Legion Post 157 Commander Susan Junker expressed her gratitude for the city’s support of this year’s Bandera Honors Veterans parade and event. The EDC allocated $2,500 to the American Legion, which Junker said was spent on a local videographer and photographer.
“We now have, for the first time, utilized drones…and have over 200 photos,” Junker said, adding many of the images include iconic Bandera scenes.
She said the footage would be provided to the city.

In other business, Lance Roy was introduced as the city’s new Public Works director. Eight people were interviewed before Roy was selected, who has 18 years of public works experience.
*Council Member Toni Kunz requested she be removed from the EDC board, however council delayed accepting her resignation and approving new members until their next regular meeting on Dec. 21, due to wording on the meeting agenda.
*City Administrator David Jordan advised council members to stop selling water from the wastewater treatment plant, after the city was cited by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for not performing adequate testing.
By the time the labs and work are paid for, the budget is upside down, Jordan said, who recommended increasing the price of the water in the future to make the program cost effective.
*Council Member Darcy Hasty asked to add the Texas Pledge of Allegiance to the beginning of future City Council meetings. Hasty also asked to address during a future meeting the use of city vehicles by city employees.
“Evidently there is no policy and we need to have one,” Hasty said.
