Bandera’s Power Dawgs sent five lifters to regional meets in Edinburg and Bishop last week with one lifter qualifying for the state meet in Corpus Christi.
In Edinburg, Emily Garcia finished with the silver in the 123 pound weight class with a three lift total of 735 pounds, her season’s best.
“She is ranked eighth in the state, but I feel she can finish in the top three if we hit our goals in squat, bench, and dead lift. She is also a candidate for Academic All State in Texas High School Womens Powerlifting Association, a three year lettermen and the captain of the Power Dawgs!
She is hard working athlete that refuses to give up. Three years ago I had to convince her to join and she was reluctant to do so but look at her now. She has grown leaps and bounds as a person and an athlete and we are very proud of what she has accomplished to this point. She will be going for personal records in all three lifts under the bright lights at State,” coach Manny Martinez said.
Garcia fared well last year, ending up as an alternate for State, but this year she will be on the big stage, representing Bandera High School and Region 5 in the 4A division at the American Bank Center in Corpus.
The Power Dawgs traveled to Bishop High School for the Boys Region 5 D2 Championships with all four lifters finishing well.
Ethan Brown placed fourth at 132 pounds with a total of 1030, setting a new personal best of 405 in the squat along the way.
“Ethan, a two time All-Region selection, finishes his high school career having been the Region 5 Champion in 2020 and was ranked first in the state going into the state meet that year, but unfortunately all sports were canceled that spring because of Covid 19,” Martinez said.
Two lifters saved their best for last.
At 181, Matthew Staton placed sixth with a total of 1290 pounds, setting a personal record in each of his three lifts.
Staton, a senior four year letterman, bench pressed 325, squatted 500 and had a 465 dead lift, benched 325, and dead lifted 465 to finish his high school career.
At 225, Kaloeb Son a senior, lifted 1365 pounds while setting PBs in all three lifts. Son benched 320, squatted 545, and had a 500 pound dead lift. He is also a four year letterman.
In the 308 pound class, sophomore Noah Sizemore had a ninth place, lifting 1440 pounds.
Sizemore, the youngest lifter at 308, benched 310, squatted 630 and dead lifted a personal best of 500 pounds. He will bear watching as he will continue to get better in the next two years.
“The boys season came to an end, but I am so proud of all the young men who put in so much work to become a better version of themselves.
Congratulations to Ashton Robinson, Cody Jurecski, Joey Flewellen, Ethan Boyd, Justin Beal, Matthew Chavez, Daniel Freeman, Jorge Cabasos, and the four Regional qualifiers for an outstanding season.
This sport is very demanding at not for the weak of heart, as it takes a lot of sacrifice to reach your goals,” Martinez said.
