Bandera Shotgunners continuing a tradition
By Chris Darus
The Bandera Prophet
For the past few weeks, the Bandera 4H Shotgun team has been on target.
In a recent shoot in Victoria, the Juniors and Intermediates took numerous awards.
Elle Vanderzee won Juniors HOA (High Overall Average), Everly Vanderazee won gold in Junior Trap, Hayden Drefke took silver in Intermediate Skeet, Brody Moore took second in Jr. Skeet and Owen Cordell won the Sportsman Award.
Senior shooters won big the next day with Ross Reynolds winning Senior 2 Trap, Kayli Beckham took first in Senior 1 for Skeet, first in WhizBang and third in Trap.
This past weekend saw Bandera travel to the Texas Scholarship Shootout in Pearsall and again, the team brought many accolades back to Bandera.
Brody Moore won HOA, placed first in Sporting Clays and WhizBang on Saturday and garnered a third in WhizBang Sunday.
Elle Vanderzee took third in the Combined Jr. and Intermediate Ladies Sporting Clays.
Everlee Vanderzee took the Sportsman Award and a $300 gift certificate.
Kayli Beckham struck again in Senior 1 and 2 Ladies Whizbang with a first and a second in Sporting Clays and a $100 gift certificate.
Jacob and Elle Vanderzee won the Adult/Youth combined event with Austin and Brody Moore placing third.
Overall, the team did a great job and many of the shooters set a personal best.
To make things even harder for their opponents, the Schreiner Shotgun team joined the weekly Wednesday practice for a little more instruction in Skeet and Trap.
The Mountaineers are one of the best teams in the nation and they provided insight and additional instruction for the entire Bandera squad, from novice shooters to Senior 2s.
The Mountaineers were four-time national runners up in D3, moved to D2 and won a Championship and then took a D1 Championship in Clay Targets in 2019.
The team placed fourth out of 95 teams at the ACUI National Championships last month.
Two of the current team members, Carma Cloudt and Jacob Cameron went through the Bandera 4H Shotgun program
It was a good two hour practice for the Bandera squad and it will no doubt just make them even better in future competitions.
