Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
June is well underway and so are the events and programs here at the Bandera Library. If you follow the library on social media (@banderalibrary) or you are signed up for our monthly newsletter you will know all the wonderful happenings.
This is the second week of the Summer Reading Program, and the kids are having a great time. Each Tuesday at 10 a.m., we host children ages 5 to 12 for reading activities, arts and crafts and more. If you haven’t registered your kids yet, be sure to contact the library to do so. While the Summer Reading Program is going on, the Storytime program will change to a weekly Makerspace Meet Up. A Makerspace is a designated space for self-directed, creative learning. Kids of all ages are encouraged to build using the materials at hand. It fosters creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Come by the library on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. to take part.
Wednesday, June 15, at 11 a.m., the Bandera Library is hosting the non-profit MHP Salud for a presentation on Medicaid and CHIP programs in the Downstairs Meeting Room. If you have any questions on how to sign up or how to access your benefits, be sure to come by. The Country and Western Music group is still scheduled for their regular meetup at 9:30 a.m., but will be in the Genealogy Room.
Sunday, June 19, is Father’s Day. To all the fathers, stepdads, uncles, and father-figures out there, have a wonderful day. June 19 is also a special holiday in American history called Juneteenth. Juneteenth is the commemoration of the emancipation of all enslaved black people in America. On June 19, in 1865, a proclamation was read out loud on the intersection of Strand and 22nd street in Galveston, announcing that all slaves were free. If you are interested in finding out more information about Juneteenth, be sure to check out the library’s blog post with a more detailed history of this holiday. Traditionally celebrated as a Texas holiday, as of last year Juneteenth is a federally recognized holiday. As a federal holiday, the library will be closed on Monday, June 20, in observation of this important day in American and Texas history. We will reopen at 9 a.m., on Tuesday, June 21.
The Bandera Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Check out our website at www.banderacountylibrary.org for all up-to-date information.
Happy tales, y’all.
