Growing Up In Bandera
By Glenn Clark
The Bandera Prophet
I'm constantly working to improve my self-worth these days. I don't know if others my age have as much difficulty with that as I do. It seems the older I get the more aware I am of the need for change but I'm also a bit stubborn. A bit stubborn meaning depending on who you are asking.
I have been set in some of my ways since childhood. I was having a bowl of cereal the other morning when it hit me. There I was slicing up a banana to add some pizazz to my breakfast just like I did when I was a kid. I've added a few more types of cereal to my preferred list but Cheerios will always be number one. I do lean heavily towards the Honey Nut variety of Cheerios these days.
Now when it comes to my favorite all-time breakfast item, the fried egg sandwich will forever remain in the top spot. I will jazz it up occasionally by adding some bacon or sausage but just bread with some mayo suites me fine. During homegrown tomato season that will be an addition to any type of sandwich I build. To quote my adopted uncle Guy Clark, "Only two things that money can't buy and that's true love and homegrown tomatoes.” I adopted him right after I first heard his song. It spoke to my heart.
I don't recall when people stopped telling me how skinny I was in earlier times. I had nightmares caused by a woman who kept telling my mom that she was sure I had a tapeworm. I endured all the jokes about being skinny too. He is so skinny he could stand under a clothesline in a rainstorm and not get wet. He is so skinny that he has to stand up twice just to throw a shadow.
I had a never ending appetite but never seemed to gain weight no matter how many baloney sandwiches I ate. Believe me it was plenty. Sometimes my sandwich consisted only of bread with a slice of baloney and a dash of catsup. I was known to eat a catsup sandwich if my mom hadn't been to the Country Shopper yet where she bought three pounds of bulk bologna for one dollar and had it sliced by Frank the butcher to her specifications.
I still consider myself to be a man with simple needs and simple ways. Unfortunately things don't always work out my way and I have never had any patience. Keep it simple is something I preached for years but it seems the world around me didn't accept my philosophy. Overthinking seems to be rampant in our society these days.
There are certain things I will not tolerate as I continue Growing Up In Bandera. Long speeches or sermons will send me to the exit early even when it comes across as being rude. I have noted over the years that people with a degree will have a tendency to overexplain things. I take it as an insult because they assume I'm too ignorant to understand their point. Bottom line, I have just always lacked patience.
