During their regular session on Thursday, commissioners addressed a laundry list of items, including unanimously approving a proclamation declaring Oct. 2-8 as National 4-H Week.

~ Commissioners approved a proposal from MDS Surveying to identify boundary and topographical information as plans continue to widen the low-water crossing at San Julian Creek and Wharton’s Dock Road.

~ Commissioners approved negotiating with a property owner in the Mustang Crossing subdivision, whose land lies in the right of way of a bridge set to be built on English Crossing Road, replacing the low-water crossing that consistently floods during heavy rain events. The property in question is .115 acres, appraised at $2,505. The owner said they would sell for $10,000.
County Engineer Dieter Werner said this was the only property of four being contested. Pct. 1 Commissioner Bruce Eliker suggested the county make another counter offer, before considering eminent domain.
“We’ve got time,” Eliker said.

~ Sheriff Dan Butts was granted permission to apply for a $61,192.96 grant through the Office of the Governor Criminal Justice Division to purchase eight ballistic shields.

~ Commissioners increased the cost of tire and wheel disposal at the county’s trash compactor stations. The hike is in response to higher rates set by disposal companies to haul the tires off. The fee schedule is posted at each station.

~ Commissioners approved allocating $14,038.85 in Covid Local Fiscal Recovery Funds to Bandera Fire and Rescue for reimbursement of paying off the Rescue 1 truck; $4,996.15 to the county’s computer department for five new computers; $42,075 for software and service fees; and $88,600 to the Lakehills Community Center.
“Until Lakehills incorporates, you’re the city,” County Judge Richard Evans said to Community Center Board President Kelly Beedle.

~ In his monthly report, Sheriff Dan Butts said during August, deputies responded to 619 calls for service; travelled 3,017 miles; and averaged 11.37 minutes arrival time from tone to on scene for priority calls. The Sheriff’s Office made 10 felony arrests and 14 misdemeanor arrests. Butts said there were 1,020 incoming 911 calls; and county deputies responded to nine calls inside the city limits.
Deputies booked 49 people into the county jail. The average inmate population was 71, with six of those being contracted inmates from other counties.
There were 112 animal related calls; 37 dogs were picked up by animal control; the average dog population in the animal control facility was 17.

~ EMS Director Shannon Griffin said for August, EMTs responded to 232 calls for service; travelled 13,408 miles, clocking 1.14 average minutes for tone to response time, and 10.33 minutes on average for tone to on scene.
