By Brady Keane

The Bandera varsity boys’ basketball team competed in the Hondo Tournament over the weekend and finished with a 2-3 record after knocking off Vanderbilt Industrial and Lee Academy before falling to Hondo, Burbank and San Antonio Fox Tech.
The Bulldogs got off to a hot start Thursday, winning back-to-back games against Industrial and Lee Academy. The Bulldogs used a strong second half push to outscore Industrial 17-5 in the fourth quarter while a strong second and third quarter stretch against Lee Academy propelled Bandera to a victory.
Eli Salas had a team high 11 points and four steals in the win over Industrial while Kayden Brown (15 points, three assists) and Corben Gonzales (10 points, four rebounds) finished in double digits against Lee Academy.
Bandera struggled a bit offensively on day two of the tournament as Hondo outscored the Bulldogs 23-8 in the second quarter en route to a 55-46 win.
Brown (14 points, five steals), Bryson Holden (10 points, four rebounds) and Salas (12 points) were the leaders for Bandera.
The Bulldogs went on to run into a red-hot Class 5A San Antonio Burbank team that edged Bandera in a 54- 41 finish. Holden was the team’s leading scorer (nine points) while Brown had a team-high four rebounds.
In the tournament finale, the Bulldogs battled through their sixth game in five days but fell just short in a heartbreaking 53-49 finish. Isaac Segura (10 points, four rebounds), Alex Dirck (eight points) and Salas (eight points, eight rebounds, six assists) led the way for Bandera.
We got off to a great start in the Hondo Tournament but didn’t respond well after a tough loss to the host team on Friday. Tournaments do a great job of exposing strengths and weaknesses, and we know what we need to improve on to get back to where we need to be moving forward. Our guys continue to play hard and that will pay off as we move toward district play.
The Bulldogs are now .500 (5-5) on the season and will look to bounce back with another busy week that started with a road game in Ingram Tuesday night.
We will then travel to the Comfort Tournament Thursday through Saturday and compete in a loaded field of 16 teams featuring state-ranked programs from several different classifications.
