Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
Happy New Year to all of our patrons, friends and neighbors! Let’s kick the new year off right. Stop by the Friends of the Library Monthly Book Fair this Saturday, Jan. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Books, audiobooks, movies and more are all available by donation. Be sure to mark your calendars for January’s author visit from Texas true crime writer Pepper Anne. Pepper has written two books about the notorious Bob Leach who became one of the most wanted criminals in Texas history, and that is saying something. In the 1880s, Leach committed all the crimes you can think of: larceny, kidnapping, cattle thief and jail breaker. The author will be here on Friday, Jan. 13 from 2:30 - 4 p.m. to discuss her books and sign copies.
January’s artist of the month is Monsignor Frank Kurzaj who has created photographs inspired by the Texas Hill Country and Bandera’s Silesian (Polish) history. Overlaid beautiful nature shots are inspirational words and phrases translated from Silesian. Father Kurzaj’s works will be here from Jan. 16 until Feb. 28. Each piece will be available to purchase and the proceeds will benefit the library and St. Stanislaus Church.
Did you know a new Girl Scout troop has been established here in Bandera? The troop meets every Tuesday afternoon at 6 p.m. in the Downstairs Meeting Room. Research has shown that women who participated in Girl Scouts as children have higher developed positive sense of self, are more civically engaged, and pursue higher education. The benefits are shown across the board regardless of age groups, social classes and races. Get your little one signed up today!
January is also when our new Spanish classes begin. The first class will be Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday. The class will be led by a recently retired UTSA professor who is a native Spanish speaker. Each class will be by donation to cover the cost of learning materials.
The Bandera Kronkosky Public Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Stay up to date with library events by following us on Facebook (@Bandera County Library), Instagram (@banderalibrary), or sign up for our monthly newsletter through our website at www.banderalibrary.org.
Happy tales, y’all.
