The Bandera Prophet
The Bandera Bulldogs varsity returned for their first home game of 2023 and took a 42-27 decision over the Canyon Lake Hawks on Teacher Appreciation Night. Now sitting at 2-1 in district play, the 27 points allowed Canyon Lake was the best defensive outing in district play for any Bulldog varsity squad in the last 17 years.
Friday night saw a slow start by both teams as neither team could hardly get a shot to drop. With the Hawks leading 4-3 to start the second, Bandera outscored Canyon Lake 12-7 to take a 15-11 lead into the locker room.
“Corben Gonzales and Cale Barnett provided a spark off the bench to bolster our zone pressure and Alex Dirck and Isaac Segura effectively protected the rim, limiting Canyon Lake’s ability to score from the paint.
Fortunately, Barnett and Gonzales were able to create some scoring opportunities in transition while point guard Eli Salas effectively attacked the middle of the Canyon Lake defense to create ef ficient scoring opportunities in the paint,” coach Brady Keane said.
Halftime saw the varsity players recognize the teachers that have made the biggest impact on them this year.
Teachers that were recognized by Bandera’s varsity players were: Danielle Anderson (selected by Solomon Alexander), Eddie Byrom (Corben Gonzales), Patricia Cardenas (Bryson Holden), Susie Carr (Cale Barnett), Gary Fite (Logan Bourgeois), Emily Huber (Kayden Brown),
Tanya Jimenez (Salvador Enriquez), Doc Martinez (Elijah Salas),
Beth Miller (Alex Dirck), Westley Miller (Scott Perry), Bonnie Powell (Hank Pate), Michelle Rodrigues (Gavin Ortiz), Alejandra Zapata (Noah Barnett) and Dan Zavorka (Isaac Segura).
Kayden Brown led the Bulldogs with 11 points and Dirck scored all eight of his points in the second half to go with his 11 boards.
The Bulldogs move to 14-11 on the season and their next two games will be a measuring stick as to where the Bulldogs are in district with Fredericksburg (17-5, 1-1) on the road Tuesday and Davenport (17-6, 3-0) at home Friday.
“We had what was statistically our worst shooting performance of the season, but we talk all the time about how our defense can help us work through bad offensive nights and the guys did a great job of buying into that. We picked up two good wins this week and now we have to continue to build on that against a pair of really tough teams in Fredericksburg and Davenport,” Keane said. Fredericksburg lost to Davenport, 50-30 Friday night at Davenport.
In other Bulldog versus Hawks basketball action, the Bulldog JV took a 42-34 decision and the freshman suffered a 30-22 setback.
Bandera stats:
Scoring: Brown, 11, Dirck, 8, C. Barnett, 6, N. Barnett, 5, Ortiz, 5, Salas, 3, Gonzales, 2, Segura, 2
Rebounds: Dirck, 11, Salas, 7, N. Barnett, 4, Segura, 4, C. Barnett, 3, Brown, 3, Gonzalez, 2
