Bandera Bulldog Soccer is back and players have taken the pitch. Both Bulldog JV and Varsity teams have been practicing since late November and have taken to the pitch for the start of the season.
Last week saw both teams match up against Uvalde at home with the Bulldog JV losing 2-0 and the varsity fell short, 3-2, but both teams showed poise under pressure and put together some good soccer.
Over this weekend the varsity team traveled to La Grange for the 1st annual Best Tournament in Texas.
The Bulldogs, who are still trying to find their rhythm; where unable to come out with a win against some playoff contention teams from Region 3.
Both Bandera goalies, Marco Reyes and Connor Garrett played well and made some great saves over the weekend.
Cristian Garcia-Carrillo stepped up to be a vocal leader on the field encouraging his younger teammates and team captain Alberto “Beto” Muzquiz kept the pace of the game alive.
Returning sophomore Ibraham MacNeil scored the lone goal of the weekend for Bandera in their game against Manor New Tech.
Co-captain Felix Diaz showed great leadership playing in multiple positions throughout the tournament and for his effort, tactical ability and skill on the ball, he was unanimously named to the All-Tournament Team. Tuesday, the Bandera JV competed against a new team from Center Point.
After a week off, the younger Bulldogs showed massive improvement taking the lead 2-1 in the first half with goals by Italian foreign exchange student athlete, Bruno Rossato.
Center Point equalized in the second half, but the Bulldogs were able to pull away with a lead after a goal by freshmen Evan Bowman.
The Pirates did not back down and scored another goal and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Standout players for Bandera included Quinlan King who showed great skill with the ball and Lane Timmons, Aiden White and Michael Verhey led the defending line preventing multiple goal scoring opportunities for the Pirates.
The varsity came away with their first win of the season against the Poteet Aggies Tuesday.
After losing 13 seniors from the previous graduating class, the young team was eager to pick up a win after the opening week of games.
Both teams were both struggling to find the net in the first half but the Bulldogs' consistency and senior poise lead to Diaz scoring his first goal of the season and first of the night. Bandera went into halftime on top, 1-0. Bandera came out early in the second half scoring in the first minute with a goal by returning Forward Cristian Garcia and Diaz got the assist.
Muzquiz capitalized on a penalty kick to bring the Bulldogs up 3-0.
A break down in our defense led to the Aggies earning their only goal of the night.
Eager to extend the lead, Diaz found the net two more times, completing the hat trick.
The final goal of the night came off the foot of Hayden Swalve who sent a rocket in which the Aggies tried to deflect, leading to an own goal.
Hudson Jackson continued to show poise under pressure and Maverick Short showed strength and kept the pace of the game flowing in the Bulldogs favor.
Both the Bandera JV and varsity will play S.A. Kennedy this Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Bulldog Stadium with match times set for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
