Bulldogs drop second in a row
Bandera falls to third place in district with five games left
By Chris Darus
The Bandera Prophet
After a 70-45 Friday evening home loss to sixth ranked Boerne, the Bulldogs were looking to rebound against their second round game against Wimberley Tuesday evening on the road. Unlike the first district meeting of both teams, Bandera played Wimberley even through the first half, going into the break down by a single point, 31-30.
The Bulldogs were in that position, “thanks to a tenacious defensive effort, a better handling of Wimberley’s pressure defense and a great defensive effort by Kayden Brown, who was tasked with slowing down the Texans’ leading scorer, Miles Schleder. who leads the nation in made three-point attempts according to MaxPreps.com. He did a phenomenal job from start to finish, holding Schleder without a three in his time on the court,” coach Brady Keane said.
Brown, a senior, scored 16 to lead Bandera scoring and teammate Noah Barnett added 14 for the contest.
The Bulldogs moved the ball well and cut the Texans lead to seven late in the fourth, but couldn’t narrow the gap and took the loss.
“We did everything we needed to defensively to pull off an upset Tuesday night in Wimberley, we just didn’t make enough shots to finish the job. I was really proud of the way our guys competed. It was frustrating to lose a game like that, but we have to put it behind us and move on quickly. Navarro is a tough team, and that will be a big game in determining playoff seeding down the stretch. We need a big crowd behind us and are looking forward to bouncing back,” Keane said. That loss moves Bandera into the third spot for district at 4-3 with five games left until the playoffs.
Those five games left to decide who makes the playoffs and who stays home and next up is 0-7 Navarro, who gave the Bulldogs a hard time in the first round where Bandera edged out a 54-50 victory.
Game time for the varsity is 6:15 p.m. and it is Boys and Girls Club Basketball Night. All Bandera Boys and Girls Club Basketball players are invited to wear their jersey and attend the game in support of the varsity Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will then take on Canyon Lake, Fredericksburg on Senior Night at home next Friday, Davenport and Boerne.
