Sunday morning, more than 1,000 bicyclists will enter Bandera County, pedaling their way up Hwy. 16 S from Helotes to Hwy. 46 on their way to Boerne. Bandera County is a leg of the Fiesta L’Etape San Antonio bicycle event’s one-day race, part of the Fiesta celebration.
The first and most serious riders are expected to make their appearance sometime around 8 a.m., and will arrive in waves until 1 p.m.
Last year, the race route including the City of Bandera and much more of the county. Council members and county commissioners expressed concerns that they were informed only weeks in advance, which they said was not adequate notice. Race organizers said they communicated with the Marshal’s Office and County Convention and Visitors Bureau months earlier at the beginning of the year, but the information for some reason was not relayed.
This year is the second of a three-year contract with the organization. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the race organizers are responsible for all security and traffic control.
