Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library

By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director

Talk about groovy. Tuesday, Aug. 1, is our first ever macramé class. We are taking it back to old school style and making macraméd hanging pot holders. Come out at 10 a.m. to the Downstairs Meeting Room to learn (or relearn) how to macramé. The library will provide the twine, just bring a four- or five-inch plant pot for your project. Bell bottoms are encouraged, but not required.
Thursday, Aug. 3, will be a busy day. The Monthly Book Club will be meeting in the Downstairs Meeting Room at 10 a.m. to discuss “Winter Pasture: One Woman’s Journey with China’s Kazakh Herders” by Li Juan.  This combination travel memoir and cultural exchange is written by an author who came from very humble beginnings in the Sichuan Province of China. After working her way from convenience store clerk to public servant and then author, Li decided to spend the winter season with herders in the freezing desert tundra of China. It is full of the remarkable stories of people who still live as nomads following their herds of sheep through rough terrain in some of the world’s most challenging environments. The Book Club meets the first Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. Stop by the library for their reading list or you can download from our website at https://banderalibrary.org/downloads . Thursdays is also when our Girls Who Code Club meets at 4 p.m. in the Teen Center. Girls aged 6 and up are welcome and will learn how to code computers, build apps and more. The club is currently learning all about building and controlling robots.
At 10:30 a.m. is the return of Story Time for preschoolers. Join us as we have a special guest Dr. Randi Mellon of Tooth Scootin’ Boogie who will be conducting a dental clinic for stuffed animals. Kids who may be afraid to go to the dentist can learn about what happens at the dentist’s office and how to take care of their teeth.
We had to reschedule our Smoothie Making Party for Friday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m., so stop on by with your teens or tweens to learn how to make a sweet and delicious (not to mention healthy) snack.  No guarantees your teen will remember to clean the blender afterwards, but at least they’re getting some fruits and veggies!
Mark your calendars for Saturday, Aug. 5, which will be another busy day. The first Saturday of every month is the Friends of the Library’s Monthly Book Fair. Take your pick of hundreds of books, audiobooks, DVDS, puzzles and more. Everything is by donation and the proceeds goes to fund the Friends’ Library Collection Development Fund. When you buy a book at the fair, you help to buy new books for the library’s collection. Hope to see you there!
Bandera Kronkosky Public Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Stay up to date with library events by following us on social media (@BanderaLibrary), or sign up for our monthly newsletter through our website at www.banderalibrary.org.
