Cross Country teams finish well in Medina Valley

The Bandera High School boys cross country team took to the Medina Valley Meet for their first 5K race of the season on Saturday. After a night race in Sealy, the team faced the heat in Medina Valley, with several runners pushing through to post solid performances.
A primary objective from coach Sam Farrell entering the week was to reduce the team’s 1-5 split time, a goal successfully met by trimming it to 50 seconds.
In the varsity race, junior Ruben Ruiz-Palacios got off to a strong start, initially placing in the top 10 for a mile and a half. Senior Mack Robinson caught up with Ruben around the one-mile mark, resulting in top 15 finishes for both, with Mack taking 12th place and Ruben finishing 14th.
Junior Nino Martinez claimed 29th place with a personal record time of 19:05, while sophomore Zach Goodin secured 23rd place and a personal record time of 18:52. Senior Hudson Jackson finished as the team's 5th man, placing 32nd. Other notable finishes included sophomore Fili Quintero at 34th, senior Kyle Moore at 41st, and senior Ben Adamietz at 67th.
"There was a moment with about a half mile to go where Ruben was running beside Mack and I could hear him telling Mack 'Let's go, let's go Mack,'” Farrell said. “That is the kind of support and encouragement I love to see in races."
In the JV race, Mariano Casas secured 9th place, with junior Hayden Swalve in 14th place. Sophomore Ayden Sarver achieved a personal record of 20:39, finishing 20th. Additional JV finishers include Lane Timmons at 24th, Keaton Sarver at 49th, Jacob Tuma at 56th, Carter Rissmiller at 73rd, Kelton Raab at 111th (with a PR of 23:42), Michael Verhey at 147th, and David Roque at 185th.
The varsity team finished 4th out of 18 teams, while the JV team secured 2nd place out of 20 teams. The meet featured over 140 varsity runners and over 200 JV competitors.
Looking ahead, the team is preparing for the Robert C Salazar Cross Country Invitational in Dilley. The upcoming week will see some changes to the varsity lineup, with Farrell providing a chance for some runners to focus on training.
“I like the direction we’re trending,” Farrell said. “Team averages are already faster this year than they were at this point last season. The guys have been flying in workouts and I’m looking forward to another good Saturday in Dilley.”

Girls finish 2nd in Medina Valley
The Bandera High School Cross Country teams were also in action Saturday at the Medina Valley Invitational 2-mile race. The varsity Girls team secured 2nd place as a team, trailing behind Lytle.
Sophomore Taytum Moeller stood out with an impressive effort, earning an 8th place finish and a medal. Senior Emily Presa followed, claiming 10th place and a medal of her own. Freshman Merry Robinson also continued to shine, securing a 12th place finish, and contributing to the Lady Bulldogs’ success.
Sophomore Riley Lalanne and junior Madi Lewis competed for the second time as varsity runners, securing 21st and 24th places respectively. Senior Carlye Niccum claimed 22nd place, rounding out the team's top five finishers.
Other finishers at the varsity level included Kierstin Brown at 29th, Kinlee Lawlis at 33rd and Jazlyn Dickerson at 35th.
At the JV level, the Lady Bulldogs placed 5th out of 20 teams. Senior Layney Bowman led the way, taking home 7th place and a medal. Junior Riley Noon, in her first race, earned 30th place. Sophomore Lori King, another newcomer, secured 32nd. Other finishers included Isabella Chapa at 41st, Lydia Devigny at 83rd, Lauren Meier at 101st, Julia Freeman at 102nd, Onna Shaw at 115th, Rosa Espino at 136th, Celeste Martinez at 144th, Dariana Mendoza at 158th and Mariska Collazo at 178th.
The Bandera girls will also return to action at the Robert C Salazar Cross Country Invitational in Dilley next weekend.
“We finally got to see most of the team compete together,” coach Brooke Ashcraft said. “I’m excited about the direction we are going.”
