Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
And just like that…August is over. Everyone should be steadying themselves to drown in Pumpkin Spice everything and to be honest – the library will be no exception. After Labor Day, it will be all pumpkin everything. Monday, Sept. 4, the library will be closed for the holiday. We hope you enjoy your long weekend!
On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the library will host a Car Seat Clinic, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our partners at the State Department of Health and their certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be here to check your car seats are properly installed, have not passed their expiration dates, fit your child’s body correctly and most importantly that the restraints are being properly used. The technicians will also be giving a brief presentation on child safety in the car. Our back parking lot will be set up like a drive-thru so that you can pull up to the Downstairs Meeting Room and have your car seats looked at properly. If possible, please bring your children so that the technicians can check that the restraints are correctly protecting your child’s body. You will need to contact Kimberly Magness at 830-796-6169 to register for the event.
On Wednesday, Sept. 6, the library will host a STEM program for kids and teens, where we will learn how to build LED throwies. Throwies are LED circuits attached to a magnet and you can “throw” it on any magnetic surface to watch it glow. We will provide supplies for this project. Just come to the Texana Room at 4 p.m. to make your own throwie.
On Thursday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m., we will hold our Monthly Book Club meeting. The group will discuss the book “Retablos,” by Octavio Solis. Solis grew up on the Texas/Mexico border and his memoir describes what life along the border is really like. Solis will be joining the meeting via Zoom so please contact the library for the log in information if you would like to join in on the discussion. The Monthly Book Club meets on the first Thursday of the month to discuss the month’s read. For a list of the upcoming discussions, go to our website https://banderalibrary.org/downloads and click the download button for the 2023 Book Club Selections.
Save the date for an Artist Talk on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 5 - 6 p.m., in the Artist of the Month Gallery. Local artist Bill Stevens will be here to talk about the various media and materials he works with including the murals he was commissioned for during a Bandera Beautification Project. While at the library, take a look at Bill’s wonderful pieces on display through the end of September. Light refreshments will be served.
Bandera Kronkosky Public Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Stay up to date with library events by following us on social media (@BanderaLibrary), or sign up for our monthly newsletter through our website at www.banderalibrary.org.
Happy tales, y’all.
