Medina Sweeps Leakey
Volleyball earns playoff berth on Senior Night

By Lindsey Kunz
MISD Superintendent/Athletic Director

Medina Bobcats and Lady Cats earned wins over Leakey last week. The Bobcats hosted the Eagles on Thursday, Oct. 12, for a district rival contest. Fans to the contest got their money’s worth as the Bobcats and Eagles both showcased strong defensive plays taking the game all the way through the fourth quarter to the final buzzer. When all was said and done, the Bobcats had earned a 42-8 victory moving to 2-0 in the district standings.
The Lady Cats then hosted the Lady Eagles on Friday for Senior Night where Seniors Autumn Turner, Shelby Jilek and Brooke Hollenbaugh were honored before the varsity contest. The match was complete with a Lady Cat victory in just three sets, but that does not tell the story of the game. Both teams went head-to-head throughout each set, even taking the “edge of your seat” third set to extra points. Final scores for the match were 25-23, 25-23, 28-26.
Tuesday night was also a back-and-forth battle for the Lady Cats as they traveled to Knippa to take on the Lady Crushers. After losing the first two sets, the Lady Cats rebounded to take the next three to earn the victory.  The two wins for the week move Medina to 5-1 in district play, and seal a spot for the Lady Cats in the Volleyball State Playoffs.

Medina Cross Country Advances
Medina Cross Country advances to the Regional Meet set for Monday, Oct. 23, in Corpus Christi. On Oct. 9, the Medina runners raced at the Rocksprings Golf Course for the District Meet. Ahnika Grassie was the sole runner for the Lady Cats and ran a personal best time of 14:15 to take second place honors and a bid to the regional meet.
The Bobcat boys team of Rylan Mills, Holland Cook, Brandon Harms, Sam Aguilar, Aiden Ortega, and Gaige Pitts completed their race in second place as a team to advance. Mills, Cook and Harms placed second, ninth and tenth, respectively, to earn a spot at the Regional meet as an individual and aid their team in the team advancement.
