Candidates' Q & A - Bandera ISD
Conducted by the League of Women Voters
What in your background qualifies you to serve as a school board trustee for Bandera ISD?
Roger Byrd: I was born and raised in Bandera, and I am a 2005 Graduate of Bandera High School. I own and operate a successful small business with over 30 employees. So, I know how to problem solve, and work with a team for the benefit of everyone involved. I have great people skills and I actively support local nonprofits and community events. I am not afraid to put in the extra work to get the result we need. Most importantly I only want what’s best for our students and staff.

What is the most pressing issue facing the Bandera ISD School Board and what do you plan to do about it?
Byrd: The most pressing issues that I see facing the board are lack of funding, security of our campuses, and distrust from the community. With the lack of funding the school board must make tough decisions on how to divide up funds. Security of our schools is a huge issue. Making sure our kids are safe and letting our parents know we are doing everything in our power to keep their kids safe is a priority. I want to make sure that our parents know that they can trust the board and ask any question and get a transparent answer.
McCarthy: Candidate did not respond.
What are the citizens who live in Bandera ISD telling you about school district problems?
Byrd: I have had conversations with parents recently that have pulled their children from the school district because the special education programs were not meeting their needs, or they are worried about safety. A lot of parents are concerned with the safety of their children on our campuses. Lastly parents are seeking more programs to equip their kids for a future career, so that those kids who may not attend college will have a career path when they graduate. These are all items that I know we can address and improve to make our schools even better than they already are.
McCarthy: Candidate did not respond.
