The Bandera girls basketball team extended its non-district winning streak to seven games last week by knocking off Llano on the road and then cruising to five consecutive wins and a first place finish at the Poteet Tournament over the weekend.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Yellowjackets 39-28 Tuesday before taking down Kipp University Prep 49-14, Idea South Flores 65-4, Center Point 40-15 and Poteet 39-17. Bandera is now 10-2 on the season with district play set to begin on Dec. 15 in Boerne.
“I like how we are playing and I especially like the effort everyone is giving,” Head Coach Cody Carruthers said. “The girls are definitely buying in to the system and luckily we are seeing the benefits of our hard work.”
Bandera used a dominant third quarter to cruise past Llano early last week, outscoring the Yellowjackets 18-7 in the frame to build some breathing room down the stretch. Junior Gabby Barerra had 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in that game, while sophomore Taytum Moeller added six points, four rebounds and five steals.
“The Llano game was another good test for us,” Carruthers said. “We came out flat in the first half and their defense gave us some problems. In the third quarter, we controlled the tempo of the game and our pressure caused turnovers that led to points for us. It was one of those games that could have gone either way and we just outplayed them in the second half.”
The Lady Bulldogs used the momentum from that win to fuel a dominant effort at the Poteet Tournament, where no team finished within 20 points. Moeller (14 points, four steals) and Kourtney Frerich (10 points, four steals) finished in double figures against Kipp, and eight different players contributed to the scoring against Idea South Flores with Barrera (21 points, five assists, eight steals), Moeller (12 points, six steals, three assists), Jessi Battle (eight points, seven points) and Brooklyn Grabs (eight points, eight rebounds) leading the way.
Barrera finished as the leading scorer through the entire tournament and was named tournament MVP. Kinlee Lawlis also earned all-tournament honors.
“Going 5-0 and winning the Poteet tournament was a great experience,” Carruthers said. “The girls and their families were very excited. It was a huge deal, but I didn’t realize how big of a deal it was until they told me they had never won a tournament before. I then asked the question, when is the last time Bandera had won a girls basketball tournament, and nobody could answer that either.”
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action at home against San Antonio Southwest tomorrow (Tuesday) before traveling to the Devine Tournament, Dec. 7-9. Bandera will travel to face San Antonio YWLA on Dec. 12, and then will open district play on the road against state-ranked No. 8 Boerne.
“I am excited about this week as it is the tough part of our schedule,” Carruthers said. “We have a tough match up on Tuesday against Southwest and then a really tough tournament starting on Thursday. We should have a good feel for where we are as a team by the end of Saturday. I am hopeful that we compete hard and make all of these games this week close games. If we are able to do that then I think we will be really excited to start district play.”
