Bandera boys extend win streak to five with victories over Devine, Hondo

The Bandera varsity boys basketball team extended its winning streak to five entering district play with a pair of wins over Devine and Hondo last week, moving the program’s record to 11-6 on the season.
The Bulldogs opened with a come-from-behind win over Devine on Tuesday, outscoring the Warhorses 38-20 in the second half to fuel a 64-54 victory. Bandera then dominated Hondo from start to finish Friday night, defeating the Owls 94-38.
“We are starting to hit our stride and play really sound team basketball,” Head Boys Basketball Coach Brady Keane said. “We had 50 assists in two games last week, and that just goes to show that our guys are starting to trust each other on the offensive end. We’re working for the best shot every possession, and it’s a lot of fun to see the brand of unselfish basketball they’re playing on game days.”
Against Devine, the Bulldogs trailed 34-26 at the half as the Warhorses used a hot-shooting second quarter to take the game’s momentum. Bandera rallied well in the third, though, limiting Devine’s offensive attack and getting into a rhythm of its own.
The Bulldogs outrebounded Devine 36-26 and tallied 21 assists in the victory. Cale Barnett had a team high 21 points, five rebounds and three assists while Elijah Salas finished with 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Isaac Segura had 10 points, two rebounds and three blocks, Corben Gonzales had 10 points and two rebounds, and Bryson Holden finished with six points, 13 rebounds and five assists.
“I was really impressed with how our team handled some first-half adversity,” Keane said. “They never blinked in the locker room at halftime, even after Devine got hot at the end of the second quarter to build up a little bit of a lead. We started the third quarter by getting a defensive stop on four of their first five possessions, and that sparked the second half run that pushed us to a road win.”
Bandera continued its momentum from the second half against Devine into an impressive performance against Hondo, jumping all over the Owls from the get-go on their way to a blowout victory. The Bulldogs again shared the ball well while racking up 29 assists, and Barnett posted another game-high 21 points to lead the scoring.
Segura finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds, Salas had 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds, Jeffry Thomas had 13 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals, Holden had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists, Layne Bourgeois had eight points, four rebounds and three assists and Beau Bergfeld finished with six points, nine rebounds and four assists.
94 points marked the most the Bulldogs have scored in a game since Nov. 11, 2006 (a 102-45 over Knippa). Bandera has also won five of its last six games against Hondo dating back to 2020.
“Our guys were really fired up for the chance to play Hondo and I thought they did a great job of channeling that energy into a solid effort on both sides of the floor,” Keane said. “Our bench energy was phenomenal and we were able to force them into low percentage shots and take advantage of our opportunities in transition. The 29 assists were the most we’ve had in any game in the last four years, and it was a fun game to be a part of.”
The Bulldogs will now shift their focus to the start of District 27-4A play as they prepare to enter the gauntlet of one of the toughest 4A districts in Texas. After qualifying for the playoffs in each of the last two seasons and winning a first-round playoff game against Cuero last year, Bandera has its sights set on making another playoff run in 2024.
The Bulldogs will open district play with Wimberley on the road Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m.
“Wimberley has been the No. 2 seed in our district each of the last two seasons,” Keane said. “They do a good job of playing physical basketball and pressuring you up and down the floor from start to finish. We are going to have to limit their 3-point shooting and force the game to be played at our pace. It’s a great challenge for us before the Christmas break and I know our kids are really excited for the opportunity.”
