The Bandera varsity boys basketball team rang in the New Year with a big 80-37 district win over Navarro, moving the team’s record to 13-9 on the season and 1-1 in District 27-4A play.
The Bulldogs dominated the game from start to finish, jumping out to a 31-5 lead. All eight varsity players contributed to the scoring effort, with junior point guard Elijah Salas leading all scorers with 25 points, 11 points and four assists.
Sophomore Jeffry Thomas had 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals; senior Corben Gonzales had 13 points and two steals; senior Cale Barnett had 11 points and three rebounds; senior Bryson Holden had six points and five rebounds; junior Beau Bergfeld had four points and 12 rebounds; senior Isaac Segura had four points and seven rebounds; and junior Layne Bourgeois had two points, two assists and two steals.
According to MaxPreps.com, 80 points marked the most in a district game for the Bulldogs since a 78-68 win over Llano on Feb. 10, 2006.
“We did a really good job of letting our defense set the tone early, and then ran the floor in transition after forcing a missed shot,” Head Coach Brady Keane said. “Our guys had a lot of energy and were ready to get back into the swing of district play. We shared the ball well and found our shooters that were hot. It was a fun game to be a part of!”
The win over Navarro gave the Bulldogs their seventh win in their last 10 games, and second consecutive victory. Bandera defeated Liberty High School 65-53 on Saturday in the finale of the Bay City Holiday Classic, behind another strong offensive performance.
Salas and Gonzales each had 14 points, Holden, Bourgeois and Barnett had eight points apiece, Thomas had six, Segura had five and Bergeld had two in the win over Liberty.
“I thought we did a great job of closing out the Bay City Tournament the right way,” Keane said. “It was a tough tournament and we weathered the storm of tough competition and got better together because of it. The Liberty game was another great example of this team’s perseverance - we had a slow start and pushed through it, and really hit our stride in the second half. That carried over to Tuesday’s game as well.”
The Bulldogs will now shift their focus to traveling to Canyon Lake on Friday. The Hawks (11-13, 1-1) have a district win over Fredericksburg (46-40) and a loss to Davenport (59-38). Bandera will return home to play Fredericksburg at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday.
“Every game in our district is a big one and we’re excited for the opportunity to get back on the road for another key matchup,” Keane said. “Canyon Lake is playing good basketball, and they’ll present a lot of challenges for us. They key will be continuing to focus on doing what we do well and sticking together as a team, and the rest will take care of itself.”
