For the ninth consecutive year and 15 cumulative years, the Bandera County Historical Commission received the Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission.
The state award, based on above average performance, quality of projects, and adherence to conservation and historical preservation standards, was first given in 2002. Commission Chairperson Kim Miles said, in 2023, the BCHC logged between 600-800 volunteer hours.
“I’m very proud of the commission,” Miles said Thursday, during Bandera County commissioners’ regular session.
“We appreciate all the work you do,” County Judge Richard Evans said. “You have to know where you came from to know where you want to go.”
~ In other business, Fire Marshal Jason Rutherford advised the court to postpone action on a countywide burn and fireworks ban. The drought index dropped from 570 to 420 last week, and Rutherford said a ban should not be implemented until the index reaches 575.
He said without a significant rain event, however, he anticipates significant ground fuels.
~ Commissioners approved an $11,800 proposal to replace leaking windows at the Bandera EMS building.
“It goes back to the original construction,” County Engineer Dieter Werner said.
The $1.2 million facility was completed in 2020.
County Auditor Darryl Sadler said he would look at the budget to prepare a recommendation for funding.
~ Bandera Business Association Vice President and Bandera County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Kimmy Williams told commissioners plans are underway for a Bandera County Fair. The event is set to be held at Mansfield Park, Oct. 18-20.
“It will be little this year, but will be bigger next year,” Williams said, adding the main focus is families and kids. “This is not for tourism. We are not trying to get HOT (Hotel Occupancy Tax) funds. This is for our community.”
Editor’s Note: Plans are also underway for the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus this October. The circus, a one-day fundraiser for the Bandera County Chamber of Commerce, will host two 90-minute shows under the big tent, featuring lions, tigers, clowns, unicycle riders, tight rope walkers and a trapeze artist. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Bandera City Park, is a prospective date for the event.
