The Bandera volleyball team opened the year with a dominant three-set win over Pearsall Tuesday night, before traveling to Cuero and placing sixth in the varsity division of the season’s first tournament.
The Bulldogs, who are battling a number of injuries to key players early in the season, secured a spot in the gold division with a 2-1 effort on Thursday that included wins over Victoria West and Incarnate Word Academy. Bandera went 0-3 on Friday before concluding tournament play with a hard fought loss to Industrial on Saturday.
Top performances throughout the week included Jayla Blake’s 12 aces and 11 kills in the win over Pearsall. Ally Kline had 24 assists, Taylor Hamilton had 8 kills and Taytum Moeller had 13 digs. In the win over Victoria West, Moeller had 12 digs, Kyra Blake had 12 assists, Hannah Wells had five kills, Lexus Moore had nine assists, Jessi Battle had four kills and Jayla Blake had 10 kills.
Sydney Moore posted 6 aces, 6 kills, 2 blocks, and 3 digs in the win over Incarnate Word, while Battle had 4 aces, 4 kills and 1 block, and Jayla Blake finished with 9 aces, 9 kills and 5 digs. Freshman Pyper Barnard contributed 3 blocks.
At the sub-varsity level, the JV Bulldogs brought home the silver bracket championship and the freshmen Bulldogs placed third in the silver bracket in Cuero.
After eight games in just five days, the varsity Bulldogs are 3-5 on the year and will now look to bounce back with their first home game of the season Tuesday night against Marion. Marion fell to Canyon Lake in its season opener and then went winless in the Wimberley Tournament over the weekend.
“I thought we saw a lot of growth in transitional defense last week,” Bandera coach Tisha Pettibon said. “The girls are working hard and working together, so our coaching staff is pleased!”
