Bandera volleyball picks up five wins at Southwest ISD tourney

After a tough loss to Jourdanton at home Tuesday evening, the Bandera volleyball team bounced back with a strong showing at the Southwest ISD Tournament over the weekend.
The Bulldogs fell to Burbank and Sotomayor before defeating Somerset on Thursday. Friday featured three straight wins over Jefferson, YWLA, and McCollum, and Bandera finished off tournament play on Saturday with a loss to Corpus Christi Carroll and a win over Corpus Christi Miller.
With tournament play in the books at the varsity level, the Bulldogs are now 10-14 on the season with six matches remaining before the start of district play.
“The girls played well this weekend,” Head Coach Tisha Pettibon said. “We finished some close sets that we were trailing in, and that was important. Our timing and chemistry continue to improve.”
In the Bulldogs’ first win of the week over Somerset, senior Jayla Blake posted nine kills, four digs and one ace. Ally Kline had 14 assists, three aces and two digs. Kinlee Lawlis had six kills, six digs and four aces. Taytum Moeller posted eight digs and one assist and Sydney Moore had six kills, three digs and one block.
Blake went on to have 13 kills, eight digs and three aces in the win over Jefferson while Kline had 21 assists, 10 digs and 1 ace. Lawlis had 20 digs, 11 assists and eight kills, Taylor Hamilton had four kills, three digs and two assists, Jessi Battle had five kills, four digs and one block, Moeller posted 19 digs and two assists and Pyper Barnard had four kills and two digs.
Blake had 14 kills in the win over YWLA while Moore posted six kills, and Lawlis had 11 kills and eight digs while Kline posted 23 assists and seven digs in the win over McCollum.
Kyra Blake (10 assists, four digs, three aces), Moore (seven kills, three digs, two aces), Battle (six kills, three digs, two blocks, one ace), Kline (11 assists, three digs, three aces) and Jayla Blake (nine digs, seven kills, one block and one ace) led the way in the victory over Corpus Christi Miller.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on the road Tuesday at TMI before traveling to take on Ingram on Friday. Bandera returns home on Tuesday, Sept. 10, to host St. Anthony.
“Our focus this week is to continue to work on offense and timing, and our play sets,” Pettibon said. “We will also continue practicing and improving our defense and serve-receive.”
